I bought a registered Nigerian Dwarf doe yesterday and I am totally confused about this whole AGS membership. I am not currently a member but plan on joining.

I understand the yearly membership is $20.00 individual and that the transfer fee for a member is $2.50. So if I join then I can transfer the registration and this whole herd name thing and tatto thing befuddles me. I understand that Maya (my new goat) has a tattoo but if I breed her do I need my own and how do I make one up. Same with a herd name, do I pull one out of a hat? I really want to breed her this fall (she was 1 on February 28th) and also my unregistered goat. I understand if I breed a non-registered Nigerian doe to a registered buck I can register her does, is this right.

See all these questions and I feel so dumb.

No, you can't register the kid out of the unregistered doe.

If you become a member you can use the member rates. And yes you will need your own herd name and tattoo. This is where you will have to put your thinking cap on and come up w/ something that fits your farm!

Thank you for your reply. I was surprised to hear the lady at the 4-H goat and sheep show say that, but figured she knew what she was talking about. LOL

When you join you will need to get a herd name and a tattoo...they can tell you if its in use or not beforehand. Nope if the doe is unregistered and bred to a regestired buck you cant register it. Only in large breed goat and then its Standard or experimental...something like that or Grade. But not in Nigerians ...

I think you have most of the esentials but I will add that when tattooing the right ear is normaly your abreviation of your farm name (Ex. LandA Miniatures=LNA) and the left ear is usualy the letter of the year and the kids number (The letter of the year is "Z". The first kid could be Z1 next Z2 and so on but numbers like 11, 22, 33 are normaly skipped.)

If you need help you can call AGS. They are very nice and understanding! If you don't have the number let me know and I can send a PM.

Good Luck & try to get the best sire possible for the doe!

. I understand if I breed a non-registered Nigerian doe to a registered buck I can register her does, is this right.

Others have addressed the other questions, but I will clarify this one.

If you are a member of ADGA (NOT AGS-they only register PB), you can breed a registered animal and a non-registered animal, and the resulting (doe) kids are called "grades". This only applies to the standard sized dairy breeds though, not Nigerian Dwarves, and the unregistered animal has to be of dairy appearance with no known meat breeds mixed in (like boers).

My original herdname was Circle K Acres, so my tattoo is CK. I never changed it, even though my herdname is now K*S (takes up less space so I can be more creative with naming kids).
