Aha! Just found out poultry regulations for Vancouver, WA

When building chicken coops, did anyone have to get permits from either the city of county?

In the city limits you do not need a building permit for a "garden shed" that is under 120 sq ft. You do however need a land use permit (http://www.cityofvancouver.us/upload/contents/439/Land_Use_EDIT.pdf)with a scaled drawing of all buildings on your property (funny thing is you also are supposed to have this land use permit for decks, fences and play structures as well), this is to make sure that you do not have more than 45% of your land covered by buildings (at least this is what I was able to discern). My thoughts on my chicken coop was that it is better to ask forgivness than to be denied and build it anyway after the denial! If you are out of the city limits in clark county then you do not need a building permit or a land use permit.

A permit is not required for:

A structure when it is used 100 percent for agricultural purposes per CCC14.05.101.2. By definition, according to the 2003 International Building Code, Chapter 2, Section 202, Definitions, an "Agricultural Building is a structure designed and constructed to house farm implements, hay, grain, poultry, livestock or other horticultural products. This structure shall not be a place of human habitation or a place of employment where agricultural products are processed, treated or packaged, nor shall it be a place used by the public".
A one (1) story detached accessory building used as a tool shed, storage shed, playhouse or other similar use, provided:
The floor area does not exceed one hundred twenty (120) square feet.
The height does not exceed eighteen (18) feet from grade.
However, the structure(s) noted above must:
Conform to the current county adopted International Building Code.
Meet the setbacks established for the zone in which it is being constructed
Meet all environmental requirements. For environmental inquiries, contact Permit Services at 1300 Franklin Street, Vancouver, WA or call (360) 397-2375 ext. 4489.

Urban Livestock Review for Clark County WA

There is a petition circulating around regarding this review. There is concern that the outcome of the review will be to limit and possible charge a license fee for small livestock.

I am close to downtown Vancouver. The three streets, and mine, are designated 'County" but we are surrounded by "city zonng". Our small area was never annexed to "the city".

I am on 1/2 acre and only have a few hens but this is a concern to me that the powers-that-be will either try to stop us from keeping hens, or more likely, start charging a fee.

I could not believe how stinkin hard it was to find out how many chickens you could have in the city of Vancouver!! I called the city and was transferred to "someone who would know" I don't know how many times. I was on the phone for ever!! I called animal control, a local feed store (Orchards), the county extension, and numerus ppl at city hall. I finally talked to the city manager.

NO LIMITS ON HENS
NO roosters.
Noise and odor complaints apply.

Connie, I had the same experience you did when trying to obtain bonafide information.

There is supposed to be a morning meeting on July 21 regarding new county proposals for keeping chickens in Clark County. I am going to try and get off work to attend the meeting.

I don't recall seeing Silkies @ Pioneer Feed but they had a couple of racks and then a big tub full of Buff Orps and Astrolorps. I bought one of each and now my Buff O is huge and bossin' everyone else around!

I am inside the city limits. way too hard to find information and ppl who were knowledgeable on the subject. everyone said "ya I think you can have chickens... let me connect you to so-n-so" and this went on and on. But I did talk to the city manager, he better know!! but no limits on hens and no roo's. no rules on how many feet from house, property line, etc.

Hmmm I thought that buff O's were the ones that were gonna get bossed around... next year I am going to get some buff O's and australorps.

your lucky you are not annexed. you don't have to pay all the city taxes! but you are so close to the city limits you get all the perks (what ever they are...) !

Just a reminder that the Clark County Planning Commission meets July 21, 10 AM regarding the Urban Livestock Review.

I'm taking the day off work and plan on attending this meeting which will have bearing on all of us that keep chickens, goats, horses, etc in Clark County.

I realize this is an older thread but I just had a visit from the Clark County Code Commissioner regarding my coop. As it turns out, livestock housing has to be 50 ft from any property line, not the same as a shed or outbuilding setback. I have one pain in the behind neighbor who must stay up nights thinking of ways to harass those of us unfortunate enough to live on bordering property... Grrr!

The run area doesn't have to follow any setback codes, though, so it can butt right up to the property line. Just wanted to warn anyone living in the area about the code. I live in the county, not within the city limits, so I wasn't all that worried. Now I have to move my little hen house because it was only 30 ft from the property line. What a pain.

Hello everyone,

Glad I found a forum that could help. So I just want to make sure before I jumping in with having chicken in my backyard. I'm in Vancouver just outside the city limits( urban growth area) but not sure on how many rooster can I have( I would maybe just want one for now but even two for future. Total of 4-5 hen and 1 rooster any information would help, I know that The amount of hens I want is ok but can't really find anything about roosters. Again thank you for any help possible

I would love to have silkies breed if anyone can point me to that direction
