Hello, we have a flock of 13 hens, of various breeds. One young hen has developed a problem in the anus. Looks like part of an internal organ (intestine?) is coming out of this area. Also, the hen is oozing some blood, and she is no longer keeping this area clean. She appears to be lower energy and perhaps listless. We had at least one hen that had this condition and died within a month or 2 of us noticing it. Recommendations/diagnosis help, please Thank you.

Sounds like prolapse. You need to wash your hands until they're extremely clean and gently push the innards back in, as I recall. Putting some Preparation H on her vent is also recommended.

Good luck!

Kooshie is right, and you're going to have to push it in a little ways, so sometimes a clean q-tip is helpful for pushing it back in.

Also, it is likely she's unable to digest food right now with everything twisted up inside, so if she's going to recover, she needs some nutrients.

Isolate her, and try feeding her boiled egg yolks - since they're so easily absorbed and so nutritious.

Also, contrary to what we tend to think, for prolapse, soaking her bum in cold water before pushing it back in can help ease the inflammation to help her get straitened out.
