Ainawgsd's farm chickens

View attachment 4153149Good morning! This is what greets me any time I open the coop door.

Ma'am. Are you supposed to be there? (No, that's not where chickens go!)
Do you think that a cap of heavy-duty aluminum foil would keep them out?

I have the same feeder, and I’d kill for a Wizard of Oz Tin Man pointy helmet type hat to put on the top.

Really glad we're using a deep litter method out at the farm. These little guys don't move! I had to refill the waterer this morning and wrestling a 5 gallon container through the door definitely stepped on someone's foot. They squacked and tried to run but I was not in a position to shift my weight off that foot so they were pinned. If we didn't have deep litter that really could have caused some damage!

Had an escapee this morning! While I was maneuvering feed and a hopper filled with oystershell through the door (both hands holding something) one of the buckeyes hopped out. He ran under the door before I could grab him and pop him back in. But he must have decided it was scary because before I could free up my hands and shut the door (to keep everyone else in) he darted back under the door and allowed me to shoot him back into the coop!

Farm chickens got watermelon for the first time ever today. They are...suspicious.
That's too funny. It kind of looks like they're greeting a chicken deity with the watermelon glowing in sunlight.

Mine used to be suspicious of anything new but I guess they trust me know because they run over eachother to see what I brought.

The malines are getting big. The one with the shorter tail seems particularly calm. He wasn't quite tidbitting this morning, but I watched him pick carrot slices out of the mash trough and put them on the ground and allow smaller chicks to have them. I even watched a buckeye snatch one directly out of his mouth! Didn't seem to bother him at all.
