Hey everyone. I'm currently housing my brooder in a spare room in my house, and naturally I'm getting the typical dust issues. My question is, does anyone have experience using something like an ionic air filter to cut the amount of dust? If my research is correct, they produce ozone which may or may not be bad for birds? Has anyone tried this here and would be willing to give some advise? Thanks!

I would not use anything with UV or ozone with birds. Particulate filters and carbon are both fine to use. There are filters made specifically for birds rooms, but are usually quite expensive. I made my own with a washable filter. It needs a few tweaks, but mostly works as intended.

Oh I hadn't considered making my own. Did you did it by yourself or with plans?

No plans. I bought the best rated, largest reusable furnace air filter I could get on Amazon or eBay. It was 2 ft square and cost about $50. I built a plywood box for it to lay on top of and installed an 8 inch duct fan in one side, blowing out. It sits on the floor. Dust settles everywhere in my chick room, all I'm trying to do is concentrate the settling onto that filter. It needs to be sealed better to prevent air bypassing the filter around the edges so I can get more flow through the filter. Or else clean it more often. I think once the filter loads up some, the path of least resistance for the dust laden air is around the filter to the fan. I often have to vacuum the dust out of the inside corners of the box when I take the filter off for cleaning, that's how I know it's getting past the filter.

That's a great idea! Just a few more questions for you though... the fan pulls air through the filter towards the ground? How well does it work when it's not gunked up?

It gathers a lot of dust and makes the room more pleasant. It might work better in a room with less work to do, I had 300+ chicks in the room for most of the summer.
The fan blows out horizontally across the floor. It is mounted in a sidewall of the box. The whole apparatus is about a ft tall and 2 ft square.
