Hi Everybody,
Love this site and all the information that I have learned so far. We just started out a few months ago raising chickens. We have 6 RIR, 6 White Leghorns, 1 EE, 1 GLW, 1 SLW, 1 Dominecker, 3 Buff Orpingtons and a Roo. They have a cozy coop and a big fenced in run with top. We have hawks, eagles and owls so we have had to put a top on the run. Their second day here, right in front of us a hawk swooped down to grab one of the RIR pullets. Scared us to death, not to mention the poor pullets, so we put the top on!
We are having the greatest time with them. First thought we would just have hens and eggs didn't know that we would become so involved with them. They are all pure pleasure (ok, the SLW is quiet a handful), but we love them so much. 5 of the hens are older and are laying eggs and the others we are waiting for them to begin. Have learned that when you buy some local they may or may not be what he said they are not the age they say they are. Live and learn that's for sure. Have learned that most are not pure breds, but it doesn't matter to us, we do not have them to show, just enjoy.
Thank you everyone for all the great information.

from the Finger Lakes of New York! What a great looking flock. Welcome to the fun and craziness! We have a lot of hawks in our area, too, so the cover wasn't even a question.
