Next time, quart bags I think! All those greens only made FIVE gallon bags.
ALSO, it took me roughly 4 months to grow, and 6 hours to clean, cut, and blanch them... For 5 "meals"...

My collards flowered 2 months ago. Imho you started them too late. We pick fresh collards on thanksgiving and Christmas. We plant them in September

That's all well and good for a fall planting, but thats a seperate thing.

I've been planting and harvesting all winter long ending with a last larger planting to put up.
I have been building a chicken coop/run, then bad weather, which has put me about 3 weeks past when I wanted to harvest them... During which time they got pretty moth eaten, which ruined the bulk of the plants.

It happens.

Can chickens eat onion greens?

My chickens are about 10 weeks they tear stuff like that up. I think our goats would like them too.

I tired growing collard greens last fall- a rabbit(s) ate every last plant in a weeks time.

Collards are super easy and don't need super beefed up soil to give you a good crop!

I filled up two 13 gallon trash cans of scraps! My chicks are all between 2-5 weeks and they looked at what I tossed them like 'What the crap am I supposed to do with this?' Lol I tore them into what I thought was itty bitty pieces but maybe I need to go smaller

Turnips seem to be the only thing I can get to grow in the greens family. Peas and green beans do ok (nothing spectacular, but there's actually a few to eat

). One year I had massive zucchini.... and that was the last year I managed to grow them. But, we go on and try. My mom had green thumbs, me? Not so much.

If at first you don't succeed, TRY AND TRY AGAIN! Don't give up!
I start my seeds in Jiffy seed starter in recycled medium sized flower trays and I put 2-3 weeds per pot. When they come up I clip off all but one per pot. You don't want to disturb the roots until they're ready to go into the ground. And the thing I've really learned that makes the biggest difference for me is the importance of MULCH!! I use grass clipping and pine needles (depending on hr you're planting) mainly cause I can get them free and I don't have to worry about them getting into my grass like wood chips would. I planted some and didn't mulch (cause I didn't have anything to use) and they just stayed the same puny sad size for months till I mulched them!!

EDIT: ALSO!!! If you're have trouble getting any of your seeds to "sprout" or germinate, try letting the seeds soak overnight in a dish of water. It REALLY helps with greens and spinach seeds.

Also, I have to say, I don't believe in the "green thumb" lol. It's a matter of trial and error for everyone and how much research and learning you do before you start =] AND starting small with just a few plants to build your skills and understanding and gradually adding to it (sort of like chicken math, I can't go into lowes without coming out with a seed packet or plant lol)

I research a lot. This year's summer garden is looking good. My tomatoes are actually growing

I will have to try mulching. I was worried that grass would sprout in my soil, but I will try I always want to do too much too fast, so I end up not being very good at any one thing.

Did you all get T-storms heavy rains early this morning?

I think we had rain early, got a few puddles. Nothing crazy though.
