ALABAMA!!

Okay, help me out here. We want hens that lay eggs regularly and are friendly I am on the IDeal site trying to decide.

We were thinking of getting a Silkie but on Ideal they are under Bantam. Are Silkie's at type of Bantama?

Also, under each type of chicken there are types. Example, if I want to get a Leghorn, which one...there are so many different kinds? Someone mentioned Mediterrian however that is not one of the options.

Plymouth Rock - again, many options, which is the one to get?

I really wanted Ameraucana or an Easter Egger however I do not see them on the Ideal site. Are they under a category that I am not familiar with?

Thanks to all!

Jen
I would recommend if you're looking at hatchery chicks, mcmurray has nice easter eggers. They were the first chickens I had, were very friendly, and laid very well.
I had some from Ideal, and they were ok, but not as friendly as the mcmurray's.

Someone suggested getting the 25 rainbow egg variety pack from Myers and selling the rest. Does that actually work? I'd be terrified I'd end up with 25 chicks permanently LOL

Shipping is fairly low according to Myers, when you get 25 chicks. Like.. fifteen dollars. That's really not bad.

Us Shelby county folks need to get together and make a list of what we want, so we can order one big order :p

You can check craigslist too. I found some nice pullets after we moved up here. It took some looking (saw some real horror shows) but the people I got mine from obviously took good care of them and were moving so had to sell. I also put an ad on craigslist asking to buy chicks. Someone responded that had jersey giants. I got them for $1 each. Biggest thing with chicks, if you don't get them sexed, you don't know what your getting. TSC should have chicks in the early spring. Other feed stores in your area too. Keep an eye on the sale sections on BYC too.

Been checking craigslist, nothing jumping out at me yet. Waiting for TSC, if that's a bust, I will go into frantic chickie acquiring mode haha.

I'm *hoping* I can feather sex TSC's chicks. I *think* I can do it. Haha. I'm gonna end up with a dozen roosters, I just know it! Well, good thing I like chicken wings.

I am new to chickens so I have a couple of questions. We want to get young chicks but I have seen a couple of discouring threads regarding ordering from a hatchery. But, unless you buy from a hatchery, how can you be sure you are getting healthy birds? Feel free to share pros and cons of each. We are near Birmingham and want to raise birds both for meat and eggs (not necessarily DP) so if you have some for sale, let me know. We have looked at ordering from McMurray.

Might just be my area up here in the mountains but two local AM radio stations have morning shows ( swap shop and call-n-tell) where you can call in and sell or ask to buy items. Its very entertaining at times, some of the folks call in every day just to hear themselves talk on the radio I believe!!!! There are usually people with chickens or you can call in and say you want to buy chickens. :D
