Hi Gregg,
My RIR where laying 9 10 eggs a day now I am down to 4 or 5.
Is this something they go through from time to time. I don't think it's molting time yet.
Thanks for responding .
Catherine

Hi Catherine, egg production rises and falls like the tides. As long as your birds are healthy and you're feeding good quality layer food, it should pick back up. Stormy, rainy weather seems to cause a reduction in egg production in my hens.

Another possibility could be mites. Check the skin around their vents (butts). If you see small crawly chigger like bugs, dust with sevin. A serious mite problem will reduce laying.

Good luck,

Greg

Not to butt in here, but I've found that this year I've had to change from the layer feed to the Flock Raiser and Game Bird Breeder crumbles. There just was not enough protein in the Layena to keep them laying regularly and their feathers looking good.
I also supplement with fish meal and organic golden flax seeds, black oil sunflower seeds, yogurt and cooked oatmeal and buttermilk.
Production has picked back up a lot and their feathers are back shiny and full.

I tried for one 50 lb bag to switch back to the Layena, but then the eggs dropped off in size and in number and they started not looking as well, so back to the Flock Raiser and back to larger and more eggs.

I keep the oyster shell in a feeder available 24/7 too.

Hi fellow Alabamian Chicken Lovers. I'm Cora and from Abbeville (about 30 minutes outside of Dothan). My husband Matt and I got are first flock last summer for fun, our 7 year old is really into animals and growing things, and its starting to go from hobby to obsession;) We have 13 hens (RIR, NHR,1 Araconda) and 2 Roosters(both RIR). We just aquired 17 chicks(rir) from a friend. They're 12 days old. We are trying to find some Jersey Giants in our area. Buying from a hatchery is so expensive. I'd love to talk to fellow chicken lovers in our area, so feel free to PM me anytime:D

Cora
