ALABAMA!!

Never thought about doing that to their area... I doubt I have cocci in my flock. I -would- treat for that. I just try and not over protect... Be too preventative, ya know? Sometimes it's kind of natures way of favoring the strong and healthy I guess.

Part of me wants to protect things all the time, and part of me realizes it's better to let go and have them exposed to things.. so they don't become susceptible. Not sure if Cloroxing their area would be the way to go. Afraid I'd kill too many beneficial stuff.

I gave my birdies weeds with dirt on them at 3-4 weeks.. Get them used to the yuckies they'd encounter outside.
I normally would not either Tomtom. But on one of the Alabama boards I subscribe to on Facebook one lady lives next to a pond and their are wild ducks and geese flying over her place. Her birds got sick she had to take them to the vet and the vet told her "There is an airborn pneumonia being spread by waterfowl." She is now having to treat all of her birds in all her coops and brooders with antibiotics! And she had to clean all the coops and runs and all the feeders and water.
I live in the middle of Catfish country! There are catfish ponds all around us! I was thinking of taking precautions! Ya'll watch out if your near ponds and wild ducks and geese!

I think if you do not have a whole bunch of chickens you are able to see if something is going around in the flock sooner, it doesn't go around as fast, and treating it isn't too bad, but some of these BYC members have tons of birds and if anything happens, it's a nightmare to treat, so doing everything to try to prevent it is much easier.

Monday I have The State AG person coming out to NPIP test all my birds. He said I have to get a permit to be a hatchery?

Yeah, I forget that there are folks with a whole bunch. I could imagine stuff spreading faster that way.

What is considered a hatchery? I mean, if you just hatch a some eggs and sell the chicks.. are you a hatchery?

I told them I wanted to sell some eggs. And they told me I had to buy a hatchery permit. So I will be a hatchery? lol

I've been trying to post these since yesterday. Everything went well. Fantastic even. I wasn't in labor for very long, maybe 2 hours.

This is SJ with his cousin, who is a month old.
