ALABAMA!!

I am going to say American, they do not have the classic "basket ball" shape of the English. They are nice large bird, though and have decent type. The trio I have came from Michigan.

By any chance you got it from one of the BYC member. Last name Hall. Can't think of his username. I believe he lives in Michigan. He breed American Std.Orpingtons. He has very nice birds.

Hello I am a newbie and I live just south of dothan, alabama!! I haven't started my flock yet just researching and about to start building my coop. Any info or tips would be great!! Where to buy pullets or chicks. Etc. thanks guys excited to finally have my own flock!!

Welcome, I am north of Dothan. What are you going to use the chickens for...eggs, meat or just for pure enjoyment? That will make a difference on what breed to start with.

Out of curiosity, I am trying to decide on a radiator or base board heater. My husband built me a chick nursery. He took part of the barn made a small room and insulated it, so that I would have a safe and temperature control room for them. But I can not decide on which heating element to use. What do you think?

I just want them for the eggs and the enjoyment. What breeds are best for that and where do I find them other than Craigslist. I want to make sure I get healthy chickens and someone said to use pullets cause u could get ur eggs quicker that way. I am about to start on my coop now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Orps - I don't have my exhibitor's list in front of me, it's at work. I will have to let you know tomorrow.

ETA: The breeders names are Clay and Laura Mills, from Ashley, MI.

Tfonda - If the room is to be used for chicks, is insulated, and has a window, I would look into one of those Heat/AC window units. You will be more concerned with cooling it in the summer than heating it in winter. The brooder lights will supply all the chicks need even in the coldest snaps we get here in Alabama. Now, if you want it warm for YOU to work there, that's a different story!

Tfonda, Tractor supply will be carrying chicks soon. They're not top quality birds, but decent starter birds.

On Facebook you can find a variety of groups with fellow backyard chicken keepers, they often sell chicks and adult birds. A safe bet is to look for someone who is NPIP, as they generally have to care more about biosecurity.

Hatcheries also sell chicks and adult birds and will ship them to you, but they can get a little pricy.

Ofcourse, lastly, fellow BYC members may have what you are looking for.

Montevallo, Al. No chicks yet, still preparing the coop and yard area, Hoping for a couple hens of Buff Orpingtons., Australorp, Columbian Rocks, Barred Rocks, and maybe NH Reds, maybe 1 Welsummer rooster. Would like to hear opinions on this mix of birds, Thanks !

Is everyone ready for the predicted snow and sleet? Heard it's already Sleeting in Huntsville.
