ALABAMA!!

Welcome Cornflake. We are in Montevallo too. Just past the university before the ball fields. We are just setting up as well. Hopefully start an incubator with some TSC chicks and then by the time they are grown our coop will be up. CAN'T WAIT

Getting busy in Montevallo!

Groleau6 - I am so glad that you are taking the plunge. You won't regret it. A few words of caution and guidance. First, those little chicks will become teens before you know it. They will get big, produce big poops, and be able to fly within a couple of weeks. Don't waste any time getting the coop ready or you will be in a rush and be tempted, or forced to cut corners. Also, I think you meant you want to start a 'brooder' for some TSC chicks. I don't mean to be a stickler, just offering some guidance on the proper terms.

Lastly, I am in need of FEWER CHICKS and would love to set you up with some that are a step up from hatchery birds, if you want to get some from me. I will take whatever TSC is getting for straight runs. Let me know.

The same goes for all of my BYC friends. I am CHICK POOR at the moment and need to move them out. If you think you might be interested in some Black Orpingtons, Black Copper Marans, EEs, mutts, or any combination of those, PM me and make me an offer. I am about to put them on CraigsList and would rather they go to you all than strangers.

The deal about my chicks is this. I got a cabinet incubator for Christmas and boy does it work! I went a little crazy throwing eggs in there and, well, I have too many. I didn't separate the eggs as they were hatching, they are all mixed up and I can guess as to the breed or mix, but can't guarantee I would be right. I do have three (3) that I know are Black Orps because I put only BkOs in that set. When I start selling started chicks from known parents, they will be more expensive, but as for these, I just need to rehome them.

If you think you even might be interested, let me know, otherwise, they will be on CL by the end of the week.

What do you have at the moment, Wisher? Still owe you some crabs *laugh*

I'm waiting on word from a breeder in Sweet water.. she's delivering some babies to me when she has a delivery in Jasper, but I'd gladly meet her somewhere closer (Tuscaloosa happens to be between Sweet Water and Jasper.... what a coinkidink). a.k.a. I could do a chicken run, possibly.

So jealous of all of you! All of you are getting or got new chicks!!!

Good lord my run is a muddy mess. I've about had it with this winter. BLEGH.

Does anyone here buy mulching hay for mud? I'm debating on getting some, but I don't know if that'll make the mess better or worse

Have used hay, leaves and pine straw. I find they all work about the same. It makes it better for a few days until they stomp all of it ino the mud and then you need more. The more mud and more chickens the more often you need to apply.

Good grief... what are you doing? :th

Adults really don't need heat and chicks... how many do you have? Running one heat lamp shouldn't be that bad o_o
have 9 brahmas. Born nov 22. Im also heating my home on the $480 power bill. But this is as high as it has ever been. Do yall think they will be ok at this age to cut off heat lamp at night? Its a very drafty semi- open coop (ugliest ive ever seen).
