I am so glad I'm in the country, I love hearing my roos in the morning. Makes me think everything is good! And yes I get my meal worms at tractor supply. My chickens absolutely love them. But they are little garbage disposals, they go coo coos for water mellon, tomatoes, rice, the only thing I gave them that they didn't like was cilantro.

We're grandfathered in - I could have a backyard full of pigs if I wanted and nobody could do anything about it, haha. My next-door neighbor decided to gripe about my daughter's little rooster all over Facebook, though. As my dad is her landlord and they've been on my wifi for years out of the kindness of my hearty (I feel sorry for the kids), I really don't give a hoot, but it got me to thinking so I decided to get the collar and experiment with it. I love hearing the little guy crow every morning, so I don't plan on using it on him long term. My curiosity got the best of me and my wallet, lol.

@Tomtommom , Tractor still had the collar on this morning and it did reduce the volume of his crowing and the frequency. If I put it on tighter, I think it just might work. I just couldn't leave it on him all day, though, so I took it off before I left for work. I'll give it a few more nights of testing. I will say that he did manage to pull the "No Crow" tag half off, though. :-/

I snagged Foghorn last night before everyone went to roost. Stuck him in a cardboard box in the kitchen. Ofcourse, when I put him out, he had to crow... It was 9 though. I could JUST hear him, and he was outside the kitchen. He's really not that bad. But... I've got some neighbors who aren't fond of us. So give them a reason to call the city and they will.

The code states nothing about not being able to have roosters. There's just a noise ordinance. Frankly, the dogs in the neighborhood are WAY louder.. but everyone had a dog, so they can't point out one dog and say "he's the noisy one". But, they can point out the one person with chickens. It's not fair.. but I will try to see if I can keep the guy around. I am more than willing to put him indoors at night and collar him during the day to reduce volume/frequency. More they really shouldn't demand. I hate to have to fight, but I just might if I have to. If he's not a nuisance, they can't complain about me having him.

@Tomtommom , don't forget about cars that drive around in the wee hours with the radio blaring - that's worse than a rooster! Of course, you could always go the therapy route if you have any health issues. We have a noise ordinance too, but the city kinda knows better than to try to mess with me or Daddy since we're still zoned as agriculture. Heck, if they tried, I'd go get 4 or 5 dozens guineas and turn 'em loose in the pasture, hehe. You're going above and beyond. Maybe if the collar works, you won't have to bring him in.

I traded some of my quails for him last month but he looks like he is turning out to be a boy and I can't keep boys where I live.

You tempt me!

...Do you eat them? Tell us more about them. I am really interested in getting muscovies for meat, but at the same time I am wondering what the heck I'm thinking (I swear the city is going to kill me at some point. I got 24 chickens right now)

Orps - YES! She hatched them all by herself and now can't even cover them *lol*. I guess that's why they go broody in the summer! I think there are 14 or 15. I thought there were 15 eggs, but a couple of quick counts (harder than you would think) give me 14 ducklings.


Tom - I've never butchered one but have eaten one. They are a little wilder tasting than duck and like most waterfowl, their carcass is large compared to meat ratio. BUT -- they are so quiet and mild mannered. I just love mine. I don't think I'd house them with chickens though. I've known others to have problems that way.

And on your rooster issue, I find that they mainly crow mostly when they are having to compete with other roosters. After his teenage phase, he may be pretty quite with no competition. I love my roosters.
