ALABAMA!!

I am going to get 2 Barred Rock pullets this afternoon they are 5wks old when can they be joined with my 17wk old chicks
I kept them in the same coop seperated by chicken wire until they were close to the same size. Even after being able to see each other for a month the older ones still tried to hurt the little ones when i put them together. Took them a few weeks but now they all get along fine.

Quote: I agree, but it also depends on the temperament of the birds, both sets. I have found that Campines can hold their own with the big girls at three to four weeks! I'd say, put the little ones in the same area as the older ones where they can see each other and let them have supervised visits several times a day. You should be able to tell pretty quick if they can be put together full time. I also like to provide an area where the little ones can get away from the older ones. I put food and water there so they can eat and drink in peace. I use 2x4 dog wire scraps, the little ones walk right through it and the bigger ones won't fit.

Today I let my youngins out, because they are still supervised, they all came in to roost, minus 1, I went looking, making my "I have treats" noise, I heard my dog make a strange bark, I went to investigate.

He got a big hug . Now granted, I'm not sure if he is guarding it for his dinner later, or if he is just guarding it.

I agree, but it also depends on the temperament of the birds, both sets.

That's what I do for mine. The little ones can run in and get away from the bigger ones. After a time of squabbles, they get along fine.

Ok so I have them in a cage that they can't get out of right now you think I should put them in a larger cage they can get out of and run back if big ones try to hurt them.

I use a large dog crate tipped on it's side. The bottom is removed. The plastic part I mean. That leaves the larger openings that the little ones can go through, but the bigger ones can't. When I first put them outside, after they're fully feathered, I put them in the crate with their own food and water. They venture out when and if they feel ready. If they feel picked on they can go back in. Eventually, they stay out.

I'm not saying it would work for everyone, it's just what I do.
