ALABAMA!!

Hi everyone ! I am new to raising chickens and I wont ever make the mistake of brooding chicks in the winter again ( live and learn !! ) but all 15 chicks are healthy , happy and warm ! My questions is = at what age is it ok for them to go to outside into the coop . I have heard its ok at 6 weeks . Even in the winter ? Our coop does not have heat , but it is draft free and secure .
Thanks

and to the Alabama thread.

They can be moved outside when they are fully feathered. About 6-8 weeks. Unless you are able to provide heat in the coop before then. Basically lower the temp 5 degrees a week until the brooder temp is the same as the outside temp. In winter, that will probably take the 6-8 weeks.
I have brooded chicks and ducklings inside in late fall.

Now, I leave to their moms.

Well, I bought 6 RIR chicks this past spring. To my surprise, my wife went out and bought 2 of the black and white speck ones. So I built a coop that looks a lot like an old barn, (I will learn how to put picks on this one day). We are getting 4-8 eggs a day now. Really enjoying it, but you know, they are digging up my back yard... I have 2 chihuahuas and they all get along really good. It's funny when I throw out some supper scraps, all you see is feathers and 2 furry tails eating together. The dogs ore boys and all the chickens are hens, so I call them the boys n girls. One of the boys loves to "scatter them". He will sneak up on them and then CHARGE! I swear, it looks just like he is laughing...
