ALABAMA!!

No chicks today at the Fort Payne TSC, they said sometime this week, and that Scottsboro TSC got theirs today. I have one RIR, my avatar. She is an egg machine. Talkative, loves to be held, and a very nosey busy body. I got her at 20 weeks from an old feller over in Jackson county and I know he didnt hold or pet her. She just loves the attention. I dont know if this is true for the breed or if it is just my Ruby. :D

I am fighting the urge to run back and get some

Got a cup of water under the light and it's at 92.5F, lowered it just a tad... Water with chicken koolaid (sav-a-chick) is ready, feeder is filled and topped with cardboard. Gonna get the pads out of my building... We're ready to rock!

The selection they have sound like ok starter chickens. I need to get over myself wanting marans, welsummers, wyandottes and other rarer breeds. This is TSC, LOL. Starter chickens... starter chickens *repeats* 2 RIR, 2 giants, 2 rocks... would be a good start *nod* I can get a blue, white, chocolate and olive egger next year. I'm sure I will screw up and lose some, or end up with some roos. We have room for 9 chickens.

I -could- wait til Wednesday, but I'm afraid I may not be able to feather sex the ones they have by then... Especially the rocks had wing tips I could see from several feet away! I think I could sort through them and find some pullets.

Check craigslist, I've seen a guy in Hueytown with Mille fleurs.

The surprise bin has a different breed every week. They could be anything. The EE's will likely be in one of the other bins. Atleast that is how ours is.

Anyway, without further ado, I want to introduce you to ducttape manson. A spacious home made out of double walled cartboard, courtesy of Ikea. It features a dogfood bag lined bottom, sealed with copious amounts of ducttape, to reduce any spills. The floors will be finished with puppy pads and a sprinkling of shavings, after the first week. A nice 2x4 roost, placed a few inches off the ground. The roof is reinforced with several wood scraps, since the resident felines were causing some sagging. It could likely withstand a pachiderm by now...This generous mansion is 34 by 27 inches, which should do the trick for about... 3 weeks haha. After that, we should have the coop completed and they will move in there, with the heat lamp for a few weeks. Closing it off so they can't get to the run part of the coop just yet, unless weather permits.

It's ugly

Glad it's in my bedroom now, that was adventure on it's own... It WAS in my livingroom, but my bedroom is more consistent in temperature and can be closed off from overly friendly felines. It's warm inside.. I was melting while I was in there taping the bag down haha

Sweetie your chicks won't be able to stand up on that slick dog bag. They'll develop spraddled legs.
And they won't need a roost for at least 3-4 weeks.
Put a towel in there till they are up and running around the first 2-3 days.

The bag is just for the base. I have puppy pads and shavings on top. It's just to keep the cardboard from getting gross. The 2x4 helps with the stability, it's high enough they can just walk under it until they're tall enough to get up there. We (me & 4 year old) just had some fun putting it together. He's super excited.

It only has to hold up a couple of weeks.

The coop is getting roofed this weekend. I think beginning-mid march they can go in the coop with a light.

Sooo the guy from TSC was like "You've had chickens all your life, like me, haven't you?"

I was able to feather sex the white rocks, the difference between the boys and girls was clear as night and day. Same for the RIR. I'm not 100% on the black giants, but I am feeling pretty confident. *struts* Oh yeah! Go me!

Edumecated some other folks that were a little confused about having backyard chickens AND I handed out some hand sanitizer to some girls who held chicks.

*snicker*

That was fun.

Told them I will call every Wednesday to see what came in. I still want 2-3 more.

And the chicken math begins! Congrats. Pics yet?

Let them settle down a while first. Five of them like to pile up. One of the black giants is a bit of a loner, she seems tired and she's trying to sleep away from the peep pile-up. We'll see how she does tomorrow.

Scooter has been watching them quietly since we got home. Happiest.. cat.. ever!

Pics soooooon. Yush.

Got my tsc chicks today tom we are definitely gonna have to split and order of marans and welsummers I too was disappointed by the lack of breeds but figured oh well rir are good layers and great general breeds and I know my other feed store will have ee's and Dominques
I know 4 are red sex links/rir and no clue about the yellow chicks but I'm pretty confident they are all pullets

They told me they will still get EE's and banty's later on, for sure. Welsummers and marans aren't gonna happen at TSC, we'll have to just beat Wisher up and take hers

The black ones are super hard to sex, they have teeny tiny fluffy wings and they're flighty, jumpy and squirmy. The other 4 are perfect angels.
