But wouldn't it be easier to get some of my hatching eggs and raise your own? I'm actually thinking about raising some off my own eggs and selling pullets at POL.

Would any of you be willing to pay $10 for a dark-egg layer hen at around 20 weeks? I would have to get that much for the girls to make any money at all and it wouldn't be much, at that. By the time I spend money for electricity, time, to hatch, buy starter, supplements, time in care and cleaning, flock grower and layer pellets, (and then subtract for all the cockerals) there wouldn't be much profit in them. Knowing my luck, I would get one pullet out of a dozen eggs!

I'm thinking I will have some room in the flock by then, the more I look at the pics I took, the more I think the JG's are boys, or atleast one of them

Back2myroots, I don't have any on my laptop. If you are facebook active, I have a page Self creek farm. Click on photos. There is an old pic of my eggs with a brown and white for comparason.

Edited to say that I also ship eggs.

We've been buying day old BCMs from a guy in eastern MS, near the Gulf Coast. Our year old BCM cock and hen appear close to the French SOP. Currently she's raising 7 chicks (6 BCMs, 1 SS - lost 4 chicks thanks to a hawk!!!). I've read the BCMs produce a majority males to females and our experience backs that up. Currently have another hen on eggs, and made arrangement for someone else (in MS, again) to start a bunch of eggs (Araucana, SS, English orps) in an incubator so I can supplement her hatchlings - which are buff and Ameraucana x BCM, for Olive Eggers. Made arrangements to buy some day old LS plus a few BCMs (Cottage Hill) in March or April, next time I have a hen go broody.

Who's this 'TCS' everyone keeps referring to? . . . :)

Hey Everyone! New to the site and Alabama. Just got 4 RIR last week. They are 1week old. I'm looking into organic feed for when they are laying age. Anyone have input on places that sell it (for a good cheaper price) or make their own or a co-op? I live in the Jefferson Co. Area. Also how do your chickens do in the summers and ways to help keep them cool. Thank in advance! These may have been brought up in previous post but there are over 100 pgs. Sorry I'm a bit lazy. :(
