Hey Everyone! New to the site and Alabama. Just got 4 RIR last week. They are 1week old. I'm looking into organic feed for when they are laying age. Anyone have input on places that sell it (for a good cheaper price) or make their own or a co-op? I live in the Jefferson Co. Area. Also how do your chickens do in the summers and ways to help keep them cool. Thank in advance! These may have been brought up in previous post but there are over 100 pgs. Sorry I'm a bit lazy. :(

I am currently working on getting a recipe together for a mill in Shelby Co to make for me. They have a minimum they will make so having someone to go in with us would be great! Ours chicks are around 2 weeks old so we will be needing the feed around the same time. Let me know if you want me to let you know what I find out.
 
Help! This is Little Foot.. He was the runt of the litter of Miller Fleur's I bought. We got him for free because he seemed to be having trouble walking on his left foot. I had originally thought it was just club foot, because his toe was curled under, but now he has developed some sort of cyst (corn, growth?!?) around his leg joint. I know the pictures are not clear, but I really don't want to cull him. He is the sweetest chick, always want's to be held, and is just so personable! He is the tiniest, but he has the best personality! Can anyone give me some advice as to what to do? His left leg is the size of a knitting needle and his right leg is normal size. He is only about a week and a half old. He still has a lot of energy, but as he grows older, he seems to be tiring from carrying his lame leg around...

Oh, JP, I'm so sorry. I can't tell anything much from the pics other than it appears to be out of place. That could be a break, a slipped tendon, spraddle leg, or something else entirely. Try to take some closer pics and post over on the emergency forum, but I suspect there is little to do but support the leg with a wrap and support the chick with warmth, vitamins, and love.
 
We've dealt with spraddle leg before with good luck by bracing the leg with a plastic coffee stirer and sports tape. But I have never tried it on feathered legs...... I would fear that the tape would mat in the feathers and cause major trama trying to take it off. Still, bracing is your best bet I think. Try this link. It's how I learned to brace curled toes and spraddle leg. Though, they use sports wrap and that was never strong enough for us. *lightbulb* Sports wrap over the feathers, it won't stick and then reinforce with tape! Good luck!

Chicken math is at a standstill for now.. They only got white Cornish in today. Nope, not gonna get 'em. I need the room for some EE's.

Next year I will buy or hatch some of the rarer birds, after I had my practice birds
