ALABAMA!!

I am in Jefferson county and I'm new to chicken keeping. I have 4 chicks that were supposed to be Dominiques but now that they are 6 weeks old they look more like Plymouth Rocks from what I have read. One has a larger comb that the other 3 so I'm thinking he is a rooster; is it too early to tell? Also it looks like a single comb not a rose comb which is what I read Dominiques have, maybe someone can tell me for sure?

I just finished my coop this weekend! I've posted a pic of the coop, the chicks when I first got them, and a recent one of a chicken from this weekend (I need to take a better current photo to show the comb).

It's weird to me that TSC has a minimum on how few chicks you can get. The feed store we go to is family run and they really don't care how few you get. When I got my first layers I was planning on only getting one chick because I really wanted a Black Australorp for a pet. My dad ended up pitching in and told me to get a RIR. I took those two home with me and a week later dad brought home two more RIRs. So along with those 4 we ended up with Freddie the Freeloader after she showed up in our yard. No one ever claimed her and she's only laid one egg in the year we've had her.

Drum roll please..

I present to you the first ever picture of my coop. LOL

It's a beauty.

Putting up wire now.. gotta make the door and put the sleeping/nesting quarters. It's an open design (as in, there will be an elevated 3 wall enclosure under the roof. They'll have 2 feet under it to walk around.) The whole thing is 8 x 12 feet, and the elevated coop will be 4x8, underneath the lowest part of the roof.

The 4x8 section without the roof will have coarse river sand in it and have several fun perches and such. I may put sand in the whole thing, or leaves.. or whatever I come up with as time goes by. It's pretty sloped ground, so the area under the roof shouldn't get too muddy.

The ladies will get morning sun and evening sun, but the midday sun will be blocked by a 60+ year old tulip tree.

Behind the coop you can see my gorgeous ghetto fabulous compost pile

That area is going to be my veggie garden.
