ALABAMA!!

Hi Illory. I'm new to AL myself. We moved up here in June. We live south of Huntsville, about 30 minutes from downtown. I'm in Somerville, Morgan County. I love it here. Hubby is wishing we lived north of town. There is just not alot in south Huntsville. We are about 20 miles from everything. Grocery store, restaurants, even fast food. I love it because we are in the mountains. North of town is so flat. LOL But there are more newer businesses up there. I go into town once every week or 2 for groceries and errands. Thats it. We don't have many neighbors. Alot of the houses that are here are vacant or used on the weekends. The waving did take some getting used to but I only see it when we are up on the mountain. And then it is only people, usually men, in trucks that wave. Never anyone in cars. I get more waves when I'm driving my '93 Bronco than my hubby's new 4runner. The waving and the speed limits. Our road is 1/2 mile until we get to a more major road. The speed limit is 45 minimum even on small 2 lane roads. Things vary based on football, not NFL but college. I remember asking at my local feed store when they closed on Saturday a few months ago. Their answer "It depends on what time the Alabama game is". LOL Though when I explained that I may have some ducklings hatching and would need to pick up some feed, the owner said that I could call them at home and he'd come open up for me. I let him know there was no way I would disturb his game day.
Hi Jdy! I've been following your story in the old posts, of which i am on page 264. When I was looking at houses last summer, my favorite one was in sommerville. It does look beautiful from the pics I saw. That house is no longer listed, but i sure loved it. As beautiful as it is, I was scared off of sommerville, and don't know if I can reconsider. Did you end up renting, or buying. I forgot.
I'm kind of hoping we find something in Hartselle or Lacys Spring.
Anyone getting annoyed by my off topic blather, let me know, and I'll stop replying on list and use pm instead.

LOL!!!! Roll Tide.... We live south west of Cullman and are 15 minutes off the interstate, and 30 minutes from major groceries and stuff like that. I go to town a few times a week when needed. I thankfully had several years of transition in TN go get used to college ball over NFL since we had both there, and the best time to go to the store is on Saturday during the Alabama game, it's like a ghost town then.... That is until you start watching the games...lol. In our area the waving seems to be random from everyone, and since we are close to Smith Lake there isn't a lot of vacant houses here, but a lot of summer ones. Welcome to Alabama, and the south!!!! Glad to have y'all!!!

My babies are starting to get their feathers!!!! And as much as I'd like to stay home and watch them today, cause I've missed them from being out of town this weekend, I have to go to Arab on errands, so I might stop in a few feed stores and see if I can find them an interesting friend...
Hope everyone had a great weekend and has a wonderful week.

It's Alabama related, so not off-topic at all!

Anyway, Mr.Rooster has been making a ruckus all night. He's attacking the sides of their pen and scaring the ladies in the process, waking me every 15 mins or so. (Don't say it Wisher, I know you warned me

) I can handle the cheeps, but man, he's a pain in the hiney.

The RIR like to jump on top of the other chickens, they're really flighty, making the others panic. So between those three, it's been rather noisy.

The rocks and RIR are a week away from being fully feathered. The rest not even close. The giants are still half fluff, with some bald spots where the fluff came off. The australorps are slow going too. The sex links are looking nice, they've got wings now, but they're a week younger, so they need to stay a little longer too.

Should I stick the rocks and RIR outside next week, without the others? Or would that cause some serious issues reintroducing? Their area is getting a little cramped for them... Maybe I could move them all, if I move the lamp too...

Hanging onto Mr. Roo until he fully feathers, then it's to Craigslist with him!

Good luck with the Craigslist Tom! It's a tough crowd on there for people just trying to get rid of roo's.

I'm about an hour away from Hunstville and would be happy to help in any way I can. Not sure exactly where your hubby will be working, but we were in the same boat when we moved to Alabama (didn't want to drive more than an hour to work in Birmingham). I watched Zillow for a few months and actually got our house on foreclosure for $88k and it's tax appraised for $170k. I'd look there and look toward the Decatur area too, it's not far from Huntsville. And Priceville is a nice quiet country area fairly close to Huntsville. Again it all depends on where he will be working location wise. Feel free to PM me and I'll do what I can to help from this side.
Thanks so much, BSisco! Wow, you got a deal on your house! How long ago did you buy, and how many acres do you have, if you don't mind me asking? Do you like it there? Where are you from, originally?

Hi Alabama peeps! I've been having fun reading all the old posts. I'm up around the 200th post. I live in CA, but hubby is looking at transfering to AL. I want to live where I can have LOTS of chickens and some goats. We visited Huntsville last year, and drove by some properties, but dh ended up turning down that job offer. He is now looking at some other positions. We would be looking to live in Toney, Hartselle, Hazel Green, New Hope, Harvest, or someplace else within 30 minutes or so from Huntsville. If anybody has anything to say about living in these places, I'd be happy to hear it. Also if you have anything good or bad to say about the middle schools and high schools, I'm all ears. Feel free to pm me. Looking at all your pics, it will be hard to pick breeds to keep. Right now I have 2 houdans, 2 EE, 1 Olive egger, one black cochin bantam frizzle, and one bantam silver spangled hamburg. I'll have to sell them all if we move. Hubby says he hopes to be moved by summer. We will see. I'm so looking forward to being a country girl! I want 5 acres or more. Right now my chickens are all in a little backyard.
Hi to everyone!
Hi Illory and welcome to the Alabama forum! I'm a native born Alabamian, from Muscle Shoals, but we spent seven years in Los Angeles (San Pedro area) before we moved back here in October 2009 when my husband retired from Los Angeles AFB. We live in Limestone County now, just to the northwest of Huntsville, in a little area called Toney, and we are out in the country - 2.5 acres - and NO restrictions on animals. I hope to have my coop built by June because a friend of mine is going to re-home some of her older girls to me to get me up and running with my own backyard chickens. I can't personally speak to the schools because I have no kids or grandkids that are school age and/or that live anywhere near us. I have a friend who lives in Athens and has her children in private school (Lindsey Lane) and they just LOVE it but you might not want that expense. I also have a friend who lives in Hazel Green and her son attends high school in that system and she HATES the administration there so I can provide that tidbit of information about that particular school for what it's worth. I think, in her opinion and experience, the administrators and many of the teachers just don't care about the students and are always in CYA mode to keep their jobs, etc. Homeschooling is HUGE in this area as well but that is definitely not for everyone. I know the Alabama legislature is currently working on passing a law that would allow homeschooled children to play sports at their local public school but not sure where they are with that. There are quite a few properties up for sale in the Limestone County area, further west of us, that are larger tracts but I think it is just land for sale, you'd have to build. Elkmont is a lovely area, most of it rural, and there might not be many (if any) restrictions on livestock there. You might try LandAndFarm.com and type in Elkmont, AL. Best of luck to you and make sure to keep up informed as to where you and your chickens land.

I just picked up Hobby Farms magaine's Annual Poultry Issue, and second edition of Chickens magazine!
