Good luck with your silkie eggs!Just candled 7 silkie eggs. I think I should be able to see something at 5 days but I only see blood vessel in 1 egg.Finger crossed the chicks are late developers. Will candle again in 5 days. Hopefully with better results.![]()

I'm using hay or straw. You can usually find a barrel of it for something like 6 bucks. Also if you have pine trees, pine straw seems to work well as well. Shavings are fine too. They'll likely just kick it all out at some point anyway.I would like to know what everyone is using in their nesting boxes. I was thinking about just using the wood shavings. Please help me figure out what to use!

Thanks Wisher! I wanted to see what my options are! My Black Australorps are going on 4 months old so I guess I still have abt. 2 months before they start laying eggs.I use shavings in some, hay in some and I have shavings covered by hay in one. It gives the girls some choices, they are all used!
Thank you chirpingcricket! Will do!We use pine straw and various leaves (oak etc.) since that's what they play/forage in. Rake them up when dry, bag them, use in floors of the pen too. Keepng it natural and cost effective.
