ALABAMA!!

Hello! I'm in north Hale County. Finally talked hubs into chickens! (I think) looking for suggestions on dual purpose breeds that can tolerate the heat as well. Been looking at coop designs and DLM as well. Any feedback is appreciated! Roll Tide y'all!
Hello Casio, Welcome neighbor from Perry Co. I also have black australorps and they are a nice large bird for dual purpose. Mine are not old enough be laying eggs yet. Still waiting, any day now! But I do like them they are friendly.

Looks like I have some homework to do. Thanks for all the tips. Right now, it has to be a covert operation. How long will you leave the turkeys in with the hens, Roo too??? I would guess they would need protection from predators too. Gotta get busy reading!

In your case Chirp you could leave the turkey in the pens with the hens till time to go to freezer camp. If the turkey are raised with the chickens they think of them as their flock! They won't hurt your roosters. I have 9 roosters still in my hen run and they all get along! Once in awhile I will see big bird chasing one of the roosters, but that is usually from the roosters trying to move up the pecking order. Big bird is the boss! lol

RE: eggs, I have EE's, will be able to ship in the fall. Selling "eating" eggs to customers right now.... Chicken coops/pens, in the south, open air pens are favored. There are a bunch of photos on this thread. I'll have to get back with you on the page number. You can also find a thread on Open Air Coops here on BYC.

Hey, on the Open Air Pens, please go to page 508, post 5708 to read and get some ideas if you like. Please send us photos of your pens when you get a chance. Talk to you soon. Chirp.

Does anyone have experience with mealworms? I am wondering how long it takes to get a large enough quantity to supplement. 50 or so birds (we are considerig meat birds this fall).

Happy Independence Day!

Chirp, my chicks seem well this morning. Moving around, eating, and cheeping. My son had to come wake me this morning to go check on them. He's seriously worried about them. He's extremely empathetic to babies and animals. He comes by that honestly! I think some of it has to do with the fact that I put a stop to him handling them while they're sick.
