ALABAMA!!

Hello! I'm in north Hale County. Finally talked hubs into chickens! (I think) looking for suggestions on dual purpose breeds that can tolerate the heat as well. Been looking at coop designs and DLM as well. Any feedback is appreciated! Roll Tide y'all!

Rhode Island Reds are a good breed. Mine have just the best personality. They are big eaters though. I call mine "my little piggies".

Thanks! I've been leaning toward RIR's, but wanted to make sure they're suited for our humid weather. I have a friend that has White Rocks and she recommends those... I may get a few of both!

I personally like the Black Australorps. They're not aggressive like the RIRs are. I'm also a big fan of the Buff Orpingtons. Though they're a little small in stature for eating I think.

This is Checker, she's about 12 weeks old. She's my special girl because of her crooked toes. I was told to cull her because she would have trouble walking. She's perfectly capable of everything else my others are.

I'm new to the New Hampshires but I'm almost sure they're dual purpose. Alice here is a sweetheart. The man I got her from says they're closely related to the RIRs. She's around 4-5 months old.

I have some white rocks, some RIR (or well, production reds, which is pretty much what you'll get from a hatchery), some partridge rock, some black Australorps and a Jersey giant.. They all came from hatcheries.

The white rocks were first to lay. Other than that, there's no real difference between them. They all get hot, they all pant, but they're ok, they just take it easy. They say to avoid birds with feathered feet, because they use their feet to cool off with. Mine are all around the same size, some a little fluffier than others, but they behave pretty similar.

Here are my EE's. they must be different ages because the larger ones feathers are different. Hoping the smaller one isn't a roo!!

Chirp, I would think a couple of turkey in the early spring and a couple in the late fall would do the two of you for the year? Maybe not? For the time being my turkey are all in with my hens. They all get along and my turkey protect the hens! lol Every time biscuit gets near the pen the turkey make an alarm sound that warns the birds to get away from him! I am raising heritage turkey. But look up heritage turkey and alot of info comes up! I have read it all! Plus Arielle on the turkey for 2013 has been a great asset along with several others! They are very amusing to watch! GO FOR IT!!!!!

Looks like I have some homework to do. Thanks for all the tips. Right now, it has to be a covert operation. How long will you leave the turkeys in with the hens, Roo too??? I would guess they would need protection from predators too. Gotta get busy reading! :highfive:
