One of my favorite pieces of equipment is what I call a ground run. It is a 4x8x2 frame with a large opening on the top and a pop door sized opening on one end. I use it for everything, including a tractor. Mine has a 2x4 base frame and 2x2s above ground with 1/2 inch welded wire on the sides and 2x4 dog fencing on the top. The opening on the top is just covered by a piece of dog wire cut larger and fastened on one side to make a flap.

It is very versitile. I use it with a piece of plywood over the pop door to give brooder chicks some time on the grass. I attach a plywood "dog house" for a broody and her clutch/chicks. I use it on the other side of the property as quarantine quarters away from the main flock. Right now is is a duck pen, complete with a kiddie pool and a tarp on one end for shade and shelter for food bowls. Before that, it was the hospital ward for said duck that had been attacked by one of those masked coons who chewed her wing nearly off.

I have some pics, I'll find them and post.......

Here it is just after I built it, I was so proud of myself! The door on top was OSB and didn't last long. I replaced it with the wire flap and I like it better.

I cut a piece of plywood for this opening and just screw it on and off if needed. I didn't want hinges because it would make it impossible to put the hen shelter or a cardboard box flush up against it.

Here it is being used for a hen to raise her chicks while the rooster keeps watch.

And here is the duck pen, note the remnants of the old door that I guess I should remove, but haven't.

I've had that ground run for at least five years and the only things I've had to do is replace the top door with wire, and OSB gussets with 'L' brackets which made it much stronger.

If I build another one, I will try 2x2s on the bottom frame as well, but it may not work as well.

Still trying to find my chicks a new home if anyone is interested. They are free :) 2 roosters and one that could be either or. The two roosters are blue Cochins and the other is a gold laced cochin. I'd also be interested in trading.

Anyone on here sell bantam Cochins?
