Just an FYI. My TSC had a "Favorite Customer" meet and greet last night. They announced that the chicks will be starting to come in on Feb. 17th.

I *think* we may share the same store......even if we don't I'm close enough that mine should get chicks around the same time.....like I need more chicks.

question..I have a Silver Laced Wyndotte hen with a broken leg, broke mid thigh. Otherwise healthy. Suggestions???
If it is mid thigh, and not in a joint, there is a good chance of recovery. Align and stabilize the fracture with tightly folded newspaper (fold it like splints/sticks) and vet wrap. Put her in a small cage in the coop where she can see the others. Make sure it is not too tight and is not rubbing her raw. Leave her for about two to three weeks, cutting off and changing only when necessary. I just did this with one and she made a full recovery. I don't know where the break was, I was afraid that it was the hip joint. I did not set or wrap it at all, just kept her in a small dog kennel for three weeks. She is walking well and submits to the rooster. She cannot, however, roost with the others, she sleeps in the nest box.

wisher, thats pretty much what I was thinking. I've rehabbed orphan fawns in the past and splinting breaks always caused problems with rubbing and cutting off circulation. Two to three weeks and they were pretty much healed on their own.

I put her in a 24X24X36 cage with a nest area, food and water. Break in mid thigh definitly.

thanks, troy

It kind of depends on the bird though.

My white rock did ok with bandaging after she got attacked. My partridge rock would THROW herself against the side of her cage to try and get herself freed from the wrap.

She was so resistant to help, I eventually just returned her to the coop, ripped side and all. Funny enough, she's back in the house now, several months later. She's healed up, but mid-molt and the rooster has decided that she's his and his alone (so she's getting pecked and pulled and harrassed). She's skinny as can be, I don't think he lets her eat... So now she's glad to be inside and welcomes it.

Hoping yours is cooperative and heals up well!

The hen I kept inside was a Campine that had never been handled much. She was attacked by a dog and I had no idea the extent of her injuries. If she had not been one of the breeders I imported from Minnisota, I would have culled her. I tried because I thought that if she could still mate and breed I could at least get some chicks off of her, even if I had to keep her separated most of the time. Time will tell. The funny thing is how tame she became while staying in the crate in the garage. At first she would flop around when I opened the door. Then, she would just turn her head away. Then one morning she was making trilling little chirps when I came to feed her. Before long, she was eating out of the scoop and would come to the door when I walked by. Now, I can walk right up to her and all the others run away!

I have been looking for a couple or four Silver Sebright hens, without luck. I'm between Bham and Tusc. I really don't want to buy a bunch from any of the hatcheries.

Kind of unrelated, but I am crossposting as much as I can.

One of my husband's employees lives in the apartment building in Jefferson county that caught fire on Friday. Her young son lost all clothes and toys he had. He wears a size 24m/3t (I am leaning toward the 3T, as he is about 3), size 8 shoes.

If anyone has anything they can spare, feel free to post here, message me or you can drop it off at the Little Caesar's in Helena, as that's where they both work.

I am unsure of the mother's size, all I know is that she's petite.

I can't really travel very far to get it, So Helena/Calera/Montevallo/Alabaster area only please.
