ALABAMA!!

Been busy so haven't popped in here in a while...glad you like your new girls, Tomtommom! They really are precious girls, and their siblings are making a LOT of friends here at my house too, with their super sweet temperaments. I laughed out loud at your story about your little scrapper!

Ms. Eleanor is getting an attitude with her little buddy that came along. Not sure what's up with that. Everytime she tries to eat, Ms. Eleanor bops her on the head

Now that little grey thing is all "Momma help me" and tries to get me to carry her. Everyone seems to pick on her, and she's so sweet and docile that she just scuttles off.. I gotta make sure she gets to eat! My 13 week old white rock cockerel thinks she's hot stuff, so I had to let him know she's mine. Poor thing. She'll be spoiled rotten with me making sure she gets her chance to eat. And she's loving it too.

Ms. Eleanor is getting along well with Orps little ones. The 12 and 13 week olds try to push her around a bit, but she goes for higher ground. She found a 5 ft tall shelf to sit on and observe her kingdom.

Gonna take some pics of the crew today

from Shelby county.

BTW huntinwidow- the other 2 I got from you are doing well.  They have integrated with the flock but they are still not sure about me.  Now the Millie Fleur I got from you is being a literal pain in the butt this week.  She bite me twice there.  :gig

I am surprised. Usually the Cochins are the most calm and nonaggressive of all my chickens.

I don't think she was being aggressive. She was curious or thought I had food on my butt(who knows). Both times I was bend down hand feeding them a mixture of eggs, rice, millets, oat & vitamin(Okay, I will confess I do cook for them sometimes). She just moved her way back here and peck me, not hard. I don't think it's helps that I turn around and feed her. I'm just re-enforcing it.

ill take acouple if there free just not babies , i cant handle those lol , today was a long day built a custom auto feeder that can hold 270 punds of chicken scratch and started on a automatic grit thrower ,

Thought I post some pics.

This is the light Brahma I got from the hardware store. My little 2 cochin is in the background.

These are my bantams.

My Millie Fleur Cochin Bantam.

Some of my quails. I have them working on the vegetation under a tree. I got to admit they have done a good job clearing it out.

He is my dog pen/chicken coop. I like it because I can move the setup to different part of the yard before they kill all my grass. Bad news it's not totally predator proof. A stray cat or raccoon can wipe them out. however, since I'm been letting them roam freely in the yard, I don't think proofing it will help too much.

You could ziptie some chicken wire to the bottom half, Orps. Wouldn't cost much and likely increase their safety.

That Brahma sort of looks like the EE you got me.

Same coloring.

Ok, Alabama, I have a problem. I had 3 full grown chickens get, "gone" last night. I didn't close their coop because I was late getting home and there was a downpour. I figured they would be ok. I was wrong. I found where they were killed, lots of loose feathers. I found where one was pulled through the hog wire. I followed the feathers for about 15 feet and then nothing. I spent an hour wandering round and round looking for where they went. No other sign. No blood. No carcass. All three were gone. I don't think it was a dog, because it couldn't take the chickens through the wire, I don't think. I thought a raccoon, maybe? Bobcat? Coyote? Bear? Mountain Lion? (Yes, there are some of both living around here.) I live in NW Alabama near Phil Campbell. Any ideas?

Thanks Wisher. I have a live trap I will set out tonight. I'll call some friends and see if someone has a hunting camera. Luckily it didn't get my 8 week old chicks and one hen. Perturbing, but I guess I can build from here.
