ALABAMA!!

This is not chicken related but kind of strange.

I went walking with my friends at Buck Creek Park in Alabaster. While on the trail we spotted what at first we thought was a rabbit on the side of the trail. On closer look, it was a white male guinea pig. It's so strange. Why is a guinea pig in the park? And running wild too. Needless to say I had to catch him before he got eaten. He didn't like it but I was able to grab him. So here I was walking the rest of the trail walking 3 dogs with 1 hand and holding a guinea pig in the other. I'm sure people was looking at me and trying to figure out why I was walking a guinea pig. LOL!! And "yes" I did have kids point at me and even asked "What is it?".

So now I have it home and safe from predator what do I do with it? I don't have any GP food so I put in some chicken scratch and veg in the cage. Is that okay for tonight? Anyone have experience with GP?

Folks usually give them alfalfa pellets (a.k.a. rabbit food), hay and they enjoy bell pepper a lot. I know someone with a guinea pig who might be open to a buddy, if you need it rehomed. Or my step-son... I bet he would love one

Loving it in Deatsville, Alabama with our Black Australorps

10 weeks old,

Nice coop! That roost seems quite a bit up! Did they fly up? Pretty impressive for 10 weeks

I agree. A friend of mine lives in a secluded area on a dirt road. He gets drop offs nearly daily. He stopped a man one day and asked what he was doing. The guy said the same thing. My friend went to his truck and handed the guy his pistol. He told him to shoot the dog, it would be more humane. The guy told him he was crazy. My friend said, "You dont see the remains of those killed by coyotes, mountain lions and bears. I do. I live here. Either put it out of its misery or take it to a shelter." The guy picked up the dog and drove off. Im sure he probably went a few miles down the road and did the same thing. Domestic animals have little to no chance at survival out there.

I've seen some strays in my area.... poor things. One had mange and it must have been hit by a car, it's intestines were hanging out of it's behind, like a prolapse in a chicken. It ran past my car on my way to work.. nothing I could do for it.

A friend of mine found a feed bag with day old puppies.. only 3 lived, the others were dead. That's just awful. She bottle raised them and found homes for two, kept the third one when it was adopted out twice and came back to her twice.

We had an unexpected litter from a stray my husband had found (he had the dog a year or so, thought she was fixed) and his dog. I got a Havanese rescue to take the pure Havanese mom and one pup that looked Havanese, I rehomed one pup and the other two look like inbred beagles no one wanted. I at times I was tempted to have them put down, they're unsocialized and untrained... tried rehoming them, but no takers. The shelter would have put them down. But we just couldn't... they live in the back of my yard now, they get food and water and they have shelter. Not a glorious life, but better than some other options.

ANYHOO!

Orps, your babies.

The black one looks almost like your previous EE. The black/white is pretty. Can you tell if they are boys or girls yet?

Not a clue. It'll be good either way... love that little black and white one, nice and calm little thing.

The black one is actually a little different up close. Black feathers but the ends are sort of dappled with brown. We'll see what they'll grow out like.

My partridge rocks went through several molts before they looked like they do now.. so maybe something similar will happen.

I'll be starting my fist hatch in almost a year in the next few days! If I can get few eggs from my new girls (or should I say, which ever one is currently laying) I'll put them in at the same time as the quail so I don't have to worry about humidity being off for any of them.

A friend of my dad's stopped by yesterday to see if we had any hens for sale. Since we don't have a RIR rooster yet and that's what he wants, he said he would buy us the rooster (when we find one) so I can start hatching eggs again. It'll turn out great all around. Maybe then I can put the two girls I had to remove due to bullying back in. My oldest 3 (Jazzy, Rhodey, and Sora) only behave themselves when we have a rooster. I'm still waiting for Henny's feathers to grow back after my drake pulled them out. My oldest girls pulled my young and unnamed RIR hen's feathers out on her wing, but she's healed and her feathers are coming back in.

He's doing good. He had a little bit of a hard time adjusting to the move, but he's happy now.

He loved his first birthday party. I'll have to find the pics so I can post them.

OMG! has it been a year already!!
