ALABAMA!!

Hi everyone! I currently reside in Decatur, raising four human babies and 30+ feather babies. I've had chickens since I was five years old on my parents' farm, so having them is how I define "home".

We will be in a good position to upgrade housing for our growing family, but need something for the interim, preferably a 3 or 4 bed/2 bath rental. Is there any rental home within a 30-40 minute commute to Redstone Arsenal (hubby's employment) that would let us keep our chickens on the property? I hand raised our flock, my kids love them, and getting rid of them for a temporary situation would break their hearts, as well as my own.

I'm up 231/431 almost at the state line, not a bad commute. You can take the parkway or pulaski pike south to the arsenal. I rarely have to deviate off the parkway. The arsenal has staggered hours, so not everyone arrives at the same time. The only bottleneck is getting thru the gate, esp when they have alerts. But, then they are liberal with arrival times because everyone is late. Lots of rental up my way in Meridianville, Hazel Green, New Market and Harvest. Once outside of Huntsville, it's unrestricted unless it's a subdivision. Redstone Arsenal is technically outside Huntsville, so you'd have to ask about any restrictions. They have dogs and cats, don't see why not hens--it's a rural post with hunting allowed on post.

Cool. I drove up that way yesterday to see a house for sale that had some acreage, and get a feel for the neighborhood. It's surrounded by subdivisions. I'm so used to seeing the spread of suburbia around Huntsville where there used to be fields and pasture, so I'm cautious about ordinances, either for rent or buy.
That's neat they allow hunting on the Arsenal, I did not know that! A few months ago we called about their rentals and although I don't remember all the details, I think we had confirmed that our flock would not be allowed there.

I grew up in Somerville and went to Brewer for a year. I'd be a happy little chicken keeper if we could find something out there. Hubby wants to avoid I-565 commute, so coming from the south east side would be preferable for him, too.

I'm just outside of Huntsville, in Madison County. Got a coop, putting up fencing hopingly, done by end of this month. Where do i get RIR's? I like any older than 8 weeks. I'm willing to pay the going rate.
