ALABAMA!!

Good chilly morning to all Alabamians. I’m not completely new to chickens or BYC, but I finally signed up and I am glad to be here. I am from Centre. I currently have 2 BO, 1 Red Star and 1 Amber Link, but I have 24 Spring chicks ordered and cannot wait. Yes, chickens are addicting.

What kind of chicks do you have coming this spring? And where did you order from? I have only ever ordered from Murray McMurray. I want to buy some Polish chicks this spring but I don't know which Hatchery I'm going to use.

Oh mercy, you’re gonna get me all excited again thinking about my new babies. Some nights I can’t shut my brain off in order to go to sleep. I originally was going to order from McMurray, but changed to Meyers Hatchery because I desperately wanted a Cream Legbar. Those boogers are hard to get...and expensive.
I ordered 19 different breeds. Two SLW, GLW, Colombian Wyandotte, 2 Welsummers, RIR, BCM, NHR, BA, EE, WCBP, CL, Barred Rock, Speckled Sussex, Dominique, Blue Ameraucana, Silver Gray Dorking, Buckeye, Barnevelder, and a Partridge Cochin. Out of these are two roosters: SLW and a Welsummer. My reason for wanting a CL was to breed to my Welsummer for some Olive Eggers. I have never thought about getting into breeding, but who knows, right? What made you start breeding?
I really, really want some Silkies and Showgirls so I just might have to hook up with you at some point.
Thanks for sending me this post. It makes me happy to know there are others close by who are as crazy as I am. :celebrate:wee

Wow! That is going to make a beautiful flock. I also have a few barred rocks and slw hens in my laying flock. I would love to have some BCM and Dorking hens. I also want cream legbars. There is a guy on Gadsden Craigslist right now with chicks for sale. I'm hoping to meet up with him this weekend. I recently hatched 25 silkies sizzles and naked necks and I just got them moved outside, phew! I also have 3 silkies setting right now and an incubator full that will hatch the 14th so I always have chicks for sale. I breed mostly as a hobby and as a way to bring in a little income for feed and more chickens of course. Darn chicken math.Haha.So happy to meet people as chicken crazy and as obsessed as I am.

Good deal. I definitely will be meeting up with you. That just gives me something else to be excited about. You know, the CL are technically not a breed yet, but I’m hoping they will be at some point. I’m just taken by them for some reason. I kind of want to breed them, but I want to find out more about them firsthand, not just what I’ve read. I’m not a fan of really flighty birds and some things I’ve read mention they could be that way, in which case, I would not be interested in breeding them.
Once I get to that point, if ever, I may be seeking advice from you. I find the incubation process interesting as well. Good luck with your dozens of chickies. They’ll be here very soon.

I also am very interested in the cream legbars. One thing I like about them is that they are Auto sexing, so no excess roosters. I have had good luck with incubation and I would be glad to help. Also the information on this site is so invaluable, it is my go-to for questions. Now if I could only learn how to post pictures on it I would feel a little more capable LOL. Let us know when your chicks arrive and good luck to you also.

We got 3" of snow here last night! :eek:My girls were not at all interested in coming outside this morning...

Haha! Mine did not want to come out either. They ran out for a sip of warm water, didn't even look at the food and went right back in. I also have 2 brooders full of chicks outside in this weather with MHP and I'm happy to say that they are making it fine.
