Me. I live in Geneva Co. but have a Dothan addy. Just 15 min from downtown Dothan. I raise RIR;s Orps of several colors and silkies. There are some others on here from Al. but most are from the northern parts. Maybe they will check in.

Hello - I live just south of Opp, Alabama. My parents are both from Stockton, Alabama!! My great, great, great grandfather was one of the founders of Stockton & our family ran the stagecoach line that went thru there!!! Absolutely beautiful town with all of the ginormous live oaks! Although my grandparents have been dead many years now, we still go back "home" as Mama & Daddy used to call it, just to get a little closer every so often.
Have several family members that live in Bay Minette now.

Hello to fellow BAMA chicken raisers. I'm joining you from Geneva County, southwest of Dothan. Just ordered my first dozen chicks and will be following the forums for advice and help. Everyone here seems very welcoming and helpful, and I appreciate it!

I'm delighted to see I have some close neighbors here!

My chicks were supposed to arrive by mail today (from Missouri, now I wish I hadn't chosen a hatchery so far away), but they did not. They need to get here tomorrow morning, or it will be over 3 days since hatching and I'm afraid they won't make it. The brooder is all set up and waiting, and we'll see. If they don't make it, I'm looking for a variety of layers to start: Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, maybe a silkie or Orpington or two. Is there a hatchery in or near Geneva County where I could get a dozen that includes a mix of varieties (so I will be able to name them and tell them apart, lol, and also just to learn about the different types of chickens). My order also included some guinea hens, and I am setting up a little guinea hen run in a berry patch that I will post later. I hope they are alright.

I don’t know of any hatcheries nearby - we bought our chickens at 2 livestock auctions & a lady in Paxton, Florida. I could check with her about giving you her contact info (I don’t give out info like that without prior permission), but I’m sure she would be glad to talk with you about some grown hens if you’re interested because she said she had more that she needed to sell. We’ve been well pleased with the 2 we got from her. Just let me know.

Thanks, Jennifer, for your reply. I have good news... picked up chicks this morning, and though we ordered 17, Cackle Hatchery sent 21 chicks, total (including guineas). One was doa, and two were "mostly dead," if you're a Princess Bride fan. Those two died within the first 15 minutes of going in the brooder. However, 18 chicks are doing great, which means we got a bonus chick and I can barely tear myself away from watching them. LOL. They are an assortment. I did get 2 RIRs, 3 olive layers, and then I can't identify the rest. It will be fun to compare their markings with breeds as they get older and try to figure out what we received. (We bought the "prepper special" ... a mix of 9 good laying hens and 1 rooster, and they didn't say which breeds). Anyway, all is well for now. I actually didn't expect that many to make it, and now I think I will have to build 2 chicken tractors, not just 1, for the chickens. Plus the "tree house" for the guineas, who will be on guard in my berry patch and eventually, my whole garden. The game is afoot.

Wonderful! I hate you lost some already, but it’s mighty hot in those delivery trucks!! I’ve got one right now that we believe has coccidiosis that we’re trying to get treated before it spreads to the rest of the flock! Idk if she’s going to pull through or not, but I won’t give up on her!! We’ve been to tractor supply several times trying to get my chicken first aid kit supplies so I’ll have everything I might need already on hand!! I’ve got 7 Barred Rock eggs in the incubator that I can’t wait to see if I’ve done everything even close to being right!! We hatched out 14 quail a couple of weeks ago that was our first hatching attempt! Good luck with your flock & even though I’ve not been in with chickens long, I’ll be glad to help if I can!

Yay for Barred Rocks! I don't think I got any of those, and that was one of the breeds I particularly wanted. Would you part with one or two, when they hatch? Here's a picture of our little flock...

Jennifer: What is in the "chicken first aid kit"? I am woefully ignorant. I need to get that, too, I'm sure. I believe I read somewhere that one should have Ampril on hand. Don't even know what that is, but I am feeding medicated chick starter. Does that cover Ampril? Not sure. Many thanks.

The Ampril is the Corid that I had to go get for my sick hen (I still don’t know if she’s going to make it....she’s been sick for several days & doesn’t seem to be getting better but worse.) The first aid kit has just about everything you might need for sickness/injuries. Here’s a link I found in one of the threads - http://www.thecapecoop.com/chicken-first-aid-kit/.
