ALABAMA!!

Out of curriosity, did/does anyone else catch a lot of flack for keeping chickens? I have heard from a dozen friends and family members that I am going to catch the chicken flu or contract anthrax. My fb profile pic is of me face to face with one of my little Chickie Darlings---my mother called having the biggest fit of her life screaming that I was going to get salmonella(which by the way is not possible)!!! I've found some info that says it's a small possibility of catching a disease from you chickens and some info saying that chicken poop can grow anthrax, but for the most part everything says raising chickens is beyond safe. So many people do it, so it can't be that bad. My question is, how do I dispatch the nay-sayers (without just slapping someone in the face)? lol

I remind them that my home grown eggs and chicken are raised in a clean coop, with shavings and hay, they eat what chickens are supposed to eat - grass, seeds, grain, insects, and get vitamins, calcium, and other minerals from their feed. It is much more likely that they (naysayers) will get salmonella from bland store bought eggs than from my backyard flock's yummy ones. If they still want to argue, tell them that they should google "commercial egg production" and "commercial poultry industry" for more information. If that doesn't disuade them,

might be your only option.

anyone have any ideas on how to get my chickens to start using the poultry nipples i bought and installed on a bucket? had it out there in the yard for quite a while and they'd still rather wait for me to get home from work to refill their chick waterer which they run dry LONG before I get home. BTW, check out my coop that i'm still in the process of building and tell me what ya'll think!

Can anyone tell me FOR SURE how to clarify roo or hen in the ISA's that I have? I really regret getting these birds, wished I'd gotten RIR's or NHR's instead.

Haha! I have experienced this for sure. Funny thing is, 3 or 4 years later, the naysayers enjoyed our home grown eggs so much that the most ardently opposed one now has chickens of her own (half of which I raised and gave her because she liked them so well)!

My best advice-wait them out, generally speaking time will show them that you are not sick and when they see you enjoying your flock and how pretty they are, they may get some of their own!!

All I can tell you on this one is the next time that they start saying something tell them that you know where your chickens have been then ask if they know where the money in their pocket has been? Or how many people touch the box or can of food at the grocery store before you bought it?

can anyone tell me how to add the description of what kind of animals you have like wisher 1000 has 3 post up thank you

Hey chick man,

You go to your profile page by clicking on your handle in the top right hand corner, then go to the bottom of the page and there is a text box where you can add your signature.

Get rid of...probably not. Trade for something else I'd rather have...maybe. Would like to get some more though, just not any ISA's, they haven't been my favorite out of this group.
