Welcome! There are several regular BYCers in that area. I have often thought, "I wish I were closer to the Huntsville area!" Do a search (on this site) for Huntsville and look at the posts to see who all is there. Good luck!

Barnyard mixes from layers can be some of the most colorful and productive of the flock.Negative. The only non friend I've sold chicks to was out in boaz. I will have a crapload hatching out saturday tho. Barnyard mutts, all from good laying stock & breeds.
I don't understand why it seems that no one in Alabama currently raises black orpingtons (non-hatchery type) .....I need one cockerel to put in with some beautiful 5th generation lavender hens and it seems impossible to find locally! Guess I'm back to ordering eggs to be shipped .....![]()

I want to start a flock of "non-hatchery," quality, large fowl, egg layers but have not made up my mind which breed or how to go about getting that quality to start with. As you see, I am in the planning stages and open to just about any breed. I like the orpingtons, but I also like Ameracaunas, the Campines, and Dominiques (p?) All I really want is a pure bred flock that I can sell (or give away) hatching eggs and birds for people that care about quality. I am not looking to make money, I just don't want to raise something that nobody else wants.
I agree, Rancher! My black that the possum got was from eggs I purchased directly from Hinkjc. I purchased the lavenders that I have as eggs from someone who bought her eggs directly from hinkjc as well. (She bought 5th generation eggs from them, so mine are grandchicks of their line.) For some reason, the only orps that seem to be common around here are the buffs. Wish you lived closer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you do decide to sell some eggs, I may be interested. What generation of lavenders do you currently have to cross back to the blacks?Sorry I'm from NY and I've got two very nice black roos. Perhaps in the spring I will offer some eggs. They will be lav crosses though. I only have lav hens and two nice black roosters.
Birds came from Hinkjc farm in PA. You can see her birds on her web site. She's the best in the North east IMO. Her buffs are to die for and she has nice whites too.
I am in the same boat, Wisher! Except that I have settled on the orps. It was down to them or wheaten marans and a car hit my wheatie rooster that took me several hatches and a long time to get. But I love the orps. They lay better than the wheaten marans. On the other side of the coin, my wheatie hens lay huge eggs and the wheatens are absolutely stunning. It just takes them much longer to lay and they lay fewer eggs .... Oh, they are both fabulous breeds though.
I say I would like birds to sell, but we have been raising chickens 5 or 6 years and we give away most of them. It is so much fun to share your hobby with loved ones and friends and watch it grow! However, when I give away (or occasionally sell) birds, I want them to be high quality birds that the future owner can be proud of, hence the desire to go back to a black with my lavenders to improve them even though we don't show birds or anything like that.
