Alarm / Distress Call After Dark

Sorry if I offended you. I am new to this and have never heard of peas crowing, but there's a lot I haven't heard of. I have heard the different breeds have different sounds. I don't even know all the breeds. Would love to hear them. I love to listen to different birds.

Thank you.

Cinder55,

A better term to use instead of "breed" your usage is "species". Breeds can also be different but not on scale I am interested in.

The guys here are all free ranging.
They certainly do cry out at night, especially now, during the breeding season.
(yes, it is the sound in that video, whatever you call that sound).
This does not seem to indicate that they are under attack, but that they sense predators nearby.
The hens nest on the ground, and these guys in the trees are their warning system.

You're right, nathhowe, it can be very alarming!
Especially now...one of the hens here has three chicks that are too young to get high up in their tree.
So they are roosting on a low branch (= vulnerable to predators).
Hearing that cry at night is frightening...
Happy to see that there are still three chicks in the morning...

I am accustomed to the typical "crowing" but something is different about it now. Neighbor, I think, has a raccoon working perimeter of pens again (my dog and I got last one). One of the pens contains the peafowl. My dog is getting riled when quality of "crow" changes. With distressed chickens, he and I both understand importance of squawling and I get out of bed and walk 1/8 in dark to investigate. If the new "crowing" is not an alarm dog will be calmed.

Right, don't be alarmed if it's just males crowing/calling whatever you want to call it. It's a specific honking noise that they make when they see a threat day or night sounds like this
Hope this helps!

Thanks for information. The sound I am hearing is quite similar. It supports suspicions something is disturbing neighbors aviary just after midnight.
