Alaska Chicken Lover's Soup for the Cold!!

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

I still need to get a couple of silkies to Donna in Chickaloon... Aimee, did you still want #1? Or shall we all just wait now, since it's SNOWING up there...

I'll wait Tori, thanks though.

None of the snow stuck here, it melted as soon as it hit the ground, but, we still spent the day preparing for the inevitable. I have a huge Costco/Sams run to make, and then it's hibernation mode for me. I prefer to leave the house as little as possible in the winter.

Deb, my BCM roo gave me the stink eye yesterday and puffed all his hackle feathers up at me. I was squatting down outside the coop door filling the waterer, so we were eye level. He didn't advance, so he didn't end up dinner, lol. We'll see how far he goes with it, or if I just startled him.

Aimee, start working with him now... don't be afraid of him... carry him around, let him know you're boss. Is he mounting the girls? Hang out with him for a while and knock him off a girl or two when he tries to mount them, then pick the girl up for yourself. If you've ever had more than one roo in the pen, you'll see that the head roo almost always tries to keep his subordinates off the girls. I've noticed that my roos go through a very protective stage between 8-12 months old, then mellow out if I do that to them. Takes a couple of weeks, but it's worth it.

My BCM roo did the dance to me the other day, so I picked him up, cuddled him, carried him around... so far he hasn't taken a swipe at me. Just watch out if you bend down to pick up a girl. Be on the lookout.

Donna, we'll figure out a way to get those two up to you. Hang in there.

We'll just hold off on the others for now.

Yep Aimee I'm just mimicking Tori here but he's at that age...

I have 3 of them testing me. I pick them all up, carry them around while doing small projects or
just go for a walk with them. I pick them up and examine them, play with their combos, feathers, feet etc....
If I go to pick up girls, I generally will run them into the coop and close the door so that none of the roosters are around to get upset.....

Gotta love teenage hormones!

So far so good with Mr. Mondo and the Colonel, but that information will be useful if I have a drift the wrong way in behavior! I'd hate to lose one of them!
We'll watch what happens then Tori, and maybe I can get them here somehow. Beautiful day here today, but colder...

Don't give up on us coming down yet. This weather just delayed things a bit. I need to talk to the DH, but Wednesday is still a possiblity. Is the Sea life center still open? I'd love to make it educational if we're going to go that direction. I'll look at their website.

I don't know if you guys have ever heard of anyone doing this, but my husband thinks that sawing off the head of a lawnmower engine and screwing in a light bulb will make a good heater for the chickens. Like, the fins that act as a radiator will put out heat without causing a fire hazard. He was also thinking about using an airplane head.

He tinkers, what can I say?
