Alaska Chicken Lover's Soup for the Cold!!

Donna I hope the two blue girls are doing wonderful! They should make you real happy, they are such sweethearts. I'm just glad we finally convinced Jim we were overcrowded! LOL!

Eveil you could be like me and have 5 roosters in one pen.....(that never fight...at least not yet). That might not always be the case though so be prepared to cull one if needed. As for quail, it depends on the age, breed etc.....I can tell you now that you will never
get rich raising birds to sell, breaking even might happen if you're lucky. I can't even begin to tell you how many birds I have given away over the years......
Tori could probably tell you that its just not worth it..Most hobbies always end up costing us more than we get out of them (unless you count the endless hours of enjoyment) .....give them away to a friend/neighbor is always a good option, they always seem to remember the good gesture and down the road maybe you have good things come back to you.... The going rate around here for a breeding age BW is $5

Sometimes it just pays to have an enjoyable dinner

If I had birds, I'd bring them up for the rabbit show on Dec 11th.

But I'm tapped out for this year. All I have left are roosters, and they're going away on Sunday.

I get $5 to $7.50 for adult bobwhites, depending on the condition/age. $5 each for adult coturnix.

I posted about them a few weeks ago... I think this time it was on FaceBook. I hate Craigslist. Are you looking for roosters?

Thanks you guys for your condolences. I had just come home from work and saw the carnage.
My DH didn't know he had come to love those chickens so much until then, and was very upset...even more than me! But all is well again, and we'll be fine with those girls we have.
And we're getting eggs, at least 2 a day! Yesterday we got 4 for 4, but we weren't expecting the last one, and it froze by the time Robert tucked the girls in for the night.

Frozen eggs, as long as they're not dirty and oozing, are perfectly fine to eat... I just thaw them out in a bowl and use them right away.

If there's any doubt, I cook 'em up and feed 'em back to the critters.

That's a good idea...for the next time. It had cracked, so Robert threw it away.
I love those Silk d'Uccles! Perhaps in the spring...also, we have a good friend who had raised some bantam chickens at one time, and will be working on her husband throughout the winter to bring him on board the chicky bandwagon. We gave her some eggs to help her cause. Everyone Loves Chickens...or should!

Ehaus,

I just thought of something. If you had a rooster in with the girls, the eggs you have even though they are probably in the fridge you could incubate them. It's against everything I know to hatch
in the winter but I'd love to volunteer my services for free as long as you take them home if and when they hatch.

Deb, you are DEVIOUS!

I may step away from BYC for a while... I'm sick and tired of offering advice and having people slap me down and tell me I'm wrong. Not on this thread, but others. And I swear, the next time I hear of someone in Florida saying that they have 500 watts of heat lamps on their girls because "they're my pets and I don't want them to be cold!" you WILL hear the scream from here.

It's 15 F-1ng degrees with a windchill near 0F here, I have NO heat on my 3 month olds in a non-insulated non-draft-free hoop pen, and they are happy and healthy and running around just fine.

I have a question though lol, for any one who would know this. My mom raised a Turkey over the summer and he is now up to 30 lbs and plan on butchering him for Thanksgiving dinner. Well for some reasen the chickens have pecked his but bald over the last few days lol. So mom put some No Pick on his butt but then realized that she plans on butchering him in a week and she wanted me to ask on here if because he had open wounds (he was bleeding from the pecking) and she applyed the No Pick if that would cause any problums with eating him. If any one here knows I would appreciate it. Shes just worried that it may tante the meat or something.
