Alaska Chicken Lover's Soup for the Cold!!

I'm still jealous of your 3 1/2 quarts. I love honey!

Same here, but we've had to start putting agave nectar in our coffee...putting on too much belly! We bought about 15 pounds of tupelo honey from a meadery here in town back in July, and it's gone. I don't recall it going...it just went into our coffee.

Mornin' folks... I'm having a slow morning, but I will try to do a head-count on the silkies and get some photos. Still pretty early to tell on the sex, but there are some signs. Some a perfect little silkies, some are "off"... one single comb has 4 toes on each foot... pretty little thing, just not quite right in silkie-rules.

Most are various shades of blue, and I think 3 are splash. I would like to save one splash roo to breed with Lisa (splash hen) but the other two will need homes. Pricing depends on the age, and first come, first pick.

Bonnie, I have several black sexlink pullets, various ages, none quite laying yet. They look totally different from the males, which look like slightly-off barred rocks. They're black, with various amounts of coppering in the hackle feathers. Quite pretty when seen in broad daylight (Like, I know... what's THAT?!?)

Donna, I am jealous of your now-non-existent honey too.... Rachel, be careful with the Agave syrup... I read something not too long ago that made me decide not to buy it again. I'll have to see if I can find it.

What a load off! That's great!

How did your bees do this year?

Bonnie, I bet a few of these hatching addicts would be glad to incubate eggs for you if your live incubators don't work out.
Heck I'd give you the gold laced cochins I have here but they belong to my girls. They rotate being broody all the time. We'll see how long this one goes for.

Way to go Donna! One of these days I'll come over THERE to see your kids...lol

Aimee, I bet you're right! LOL I would love it if the live ones work out tho

I hope you get a better year then this i have talked to a few people that rase bees for there honey and they all say this year sucked. If you get enough to pass around next year think of me I love buying/trading for some fresh honey though I don't use a lot it seams every time I go to get some the honey is gone

kids like it to.

I know this is a little of topic but has anyone had jumbo brown & pharaoh coturnix quail? My dad is trying to get me to get some. He wants to have them for meat and eggs? I read some of the post on here talking about how the bob white ones are little meanies and dont want that cause they will be going in the same run as my chickens once they have feathered out. Any idea? info? thanks

I do, but I need to get my numbers back up a bit. The coturnix are great because of the quick turnaround... 16-17 day incubation, 6-8 weeks to maturity, and BAM... you have a huge colony. Good eating, eggs are great.

Bobwhites take almost as long as chickens to mature, and are little snots. I have several in a "hospital" brooder with scalped heads or skinned feet.

Good eating, and a good thing because that's where most of them are going!
