Alaska Chicken Lover's Soup for the Cold!!

But then your chickens could be like mine and not touch barley.....We used to feed them COB until we saw them all
picking out all the corn and leaving the oats and barley....LOL!

However, I learned of something new today called Dairy ration. I guess it's good for all livestock including rabbits etc.....One 80lb bag is $26.00 I have my
first bag and will try it out...

I've seen that. I'd very much like to know how they like it.
Bonnie, I soak it in a bucket for 2 days and scatter it or put it in feeders... It's pretty hard grain but has a fairly high protein content so I don't have to add too much.... Deb is right about the corn.. They love that stuff. i don't give it to them anymore. I am allergic to it (somewhat) anyway.

So after soaking it's still fairly dry that it won't mold if in a large feeder?

I have DOB for mine, they get it before bed almost every night, I don't ever see much left.

AK Mill & Feed has the Dairy Ration... Blue Moon... isn't that Rachel's "secret" concoction? I special ordered it down here, and mix it as a supplement with the barley/soy/beet/yada yada... they LOVE it. 18% protein, and a lot of good minerals.

I'll have to get some of the barley and see if they like it. Sprouts are good! And we can get the Dairy Ration when we go to Anchorage... I'll have to do some mixing of my own!

The Dairy Ration sounds like it's about the same price (more or less) than the Budet Feed, but higher protein. However, the Budget feed stuff does have the oyster shell etc in it...Hm.

Do tell me how it works out, Deb.

Hey Donna, Where do you get your fish meal? I think i'll try your recipe, or some approximation. The thing I was worried about was getting the protein high enough. I'd much rather do this than go with the MannaPro stuff from WalMart. (I think their layer crumbles are only 15% protein, anyway!)

I do have a couple of dark blue orpington pullets that can go to a new home. I have 3 splash chicks in the brooder, but I have no idea if they're boys or girls yet. A couple more weeks and I'll know.

Here's one...

She's $15.

I want her! I think I've reached my limit, though, with four.

Sheesh!

No worries... my Orpingtons are not going anywhere, and there will be more chicks in the Spring... from exhibition stock!

Deb... how's your chicken house this morning? Anyone else have issues with the wind last night? I didn't hear anything til I woke up this morning, but all the leaves are on the ground now!
