Wasilla, Alaska here! And I'm a new poster to BYC - formerly a lurker . Also a new chicken-haver . And hence also increasingly obsessed with their amazing sweet personalities and how much fun they are! But have gotten so many different opinions for how to do chickens well in Alaska (mine are pullets, will be for eggs)

Hello All,
I am currently a CA chicken mama but we are looking at relocating to Alaska (Wasilla area) this is a couple years out but I'm doing all my research now. I'm assuming that I would need to buy specific "cold friendly" hens when relocating as my sunny Ca, hens would probably not fair well is that correct? We are coming to visit between Christmas and New Years figuring that we wanted to see Alaska at its worst time to know if it was going to be a good fit for us. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. For those who live in Wasilla…How do you like it? Any complaints?

Hello! Yes we arrived in Anchorage yesterday and spent today driving to Wasilla, big lake, Chugiak, Houston and everywhere in between. it's beautiful here and so far we are loving it. I'm hoping to make some connections with locals before we head home on New Years Day.

Hello everyone! We're in Eagle River Alaska. We're total chicken newbies, but I did help take care of my aunt's chickens while growing up in West Virginia. I look forward to y'alls advice as the weather turns colder again, especially. For now, we're fighting the billion mosquitoes and counting the days till our week old babies move outside to their new coop.

Delta Junction! I am starting a new flock(s) of chickens, ducks, and geese. I got my first batch of chicks in the mail the day before yesterday and only 8 of the 31 made it. There was a problem with the postal. My ducks should be here in april, I am getting excited for spring!!

I'm on the Kenai Peninsula. I've had chickens here for 4 years now. I wish you luck with your new flocks. The most cold hardy hens we've had are the Black Sex-link and the Rhode Island Reds. I'm ordering chicks through the mail for the first time this spring, so we'll see how that goes!
