Albemarle Road church fined $100 per branch for excessive tree pruning

ETA: My mom has Crepe Myrtles.......after so big, they are not pruned or trimmed.

Wonder what the City does about the trees Duke Energy's subcontractors trim or top? My bradford pear (which I abhor) was topped last year by them, now it is a hot mess.

Ridiculous. If I lived there, I doubt I'd ever plant a tree or shrub if that meant I couldn't prune or remove it without governmental permission.

"The ordinance was adopted to prevent future damage to houses and property." Just how much damage to a house could a crepe myrtle do? The ones in those photos on the church property are far to small to damage anything.

That there definitely looks like a bush to me. Most trees do better if you trim them. In fact, we've saved many trees on our property by trimming them "excessively". Sometimes that just gives a boost of energy to the rest of the tree and it's not wasting so much trying to keep the other unecessary branches alive. These ordinances are a little too 1984 for me. It's really, really sad.

Me too.

They look nice. They are kept more like shrubs than trees. Crepe Myrtles grow like weeds if you don't prune them. Chalotte must be really hurting for money if they are going after the churches now!! Why not go after Duke Power, Davey or Auspund for the ways they trim the trees away from the powerline around here!!

Yes I do understand what you are saying. Crepes are only thick at the base, which makes this whole thing insane. Crepes to do not grow back weird. They grow up and bend down. It's also a BUSH. I wonder if they have BUSH trimming laws too.

Don't know much about them, there aren't any around here, but they look like a little more than a bush or shrub to me.But you are right the whole thing is insane.

My mom's CM is over 30 yrs old.......can you imagine how big it is?

I have shoots from it planted....... will have to try to snag a pic of it sometime soon.
It is HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Ours are huge...about 20 foot tall. I don't trim them back....that is ridiculous on fining someone for cutting limbs...I could understand cutting down the tree and leaving the stump....but even then....crepe myrtles will still come back....

Maiming Crepe Myrtles should be a capital offense. They look so much nicer if you just leave them alone or remove problem limbs. A lot of folks around here cut them back like the ones in the OP link and they look like crap (to me).

Yes SERIOUSLY! They are beautiful but man they just never stop!!!! My mom's have taken over her yard - 30 feet tall even though they are pruned regularly.
