Alex's Journal of Keeping Heritage Cockerels for Meat

I also wanted to add. If you are LUCKY, you will get around 50 birds total. Our order this year was larger than last year. This year we received 47 chicks and 2 ducks. Since shipping is included in the surprise, it came out to about $1.25/bird. We've had 8 losses so far and a couple more that aren't looking very well. On a surprise its hard to handle the losses for reimbursement, my understanding is they guarantee at least 40 healthy birds. You might get a couple of turkey though, which would be nice but...

Since you are wanting some pullets, if you were to do the Heavy Barnyard Special or the Special Heavy assorted, you would get pullets and heavier meat options, a much better deal that the surprise, and I think per chick, after shipping you would do better, in the end, over the surprise. You could even do the frypan special, order 100, receive 5 free chicks or ducks, order a couple of pullets for layers, cross fingers that there are a couple of pullets in your free chicks, sell off half of your roosters and break even for your order. Just make sure to add in shipping coverage when selling the extras.
