Most chickens are able to handle zero degree weather without problems. Orps are super fluffy and do really well in the cold. I do keep a lamp over the waterer though, to keep it from freezing. There was an article a while back in the BYC newsletter about this. They said it was often worse to add heat (due to increased humidity) than it was to let them be. Still I do keep that one little light on to warm the water just a tad. I just can't bring myself to turn it off. Especially when it's still snowing like it is today!

Miss Gretta my first rescue RIR..about 3 years old. The queen of the roost!
Love the BO breed so far..so sweet! As far as my RIR..I enjoy her. She is not used to being handled..and was left in her coop to fend for herself after a house was empty. Took her a while to get used to me..have had her for 8 months now..and she is letting me hold her and will run to me outside for treats!! Gretta is a great layer..with an egg every day! Has the best egg song I have ever heard...

Thanks...Miss Gretta is the sweetest lady! She was my fisrt chicken as an adult...she started it all! I had just a great experiance with her I wanted more!​
