Not sure if you are aware of this but when incubating dark eggs your humidity should be roughly 30-35% particularly for Marans as that is what I have experience with. Keep it in mind with any other hatches you may take on.

Yes same rules will apply to most dark eggs. 30-35% humidity. No don’t ask me why cause I have no clue.I actually just looked up more info on this and a lot of people had the same issue hatching darker eggs...I'm now curious if this is whybi really had more difficulty hatching my Penedesenca. The breeder kept telling me it was temperature related, but everything was correct, even with a separate thermometer. From what I just read, he should have known humidity was the issue, but never told me hatching them was different...![]()

I think the eggs are just less porous so they don’t loose moisture as fast
I would never do something to remove the bloom off of the egg. No need to file just keep humidity low. That actually makes sense...Someone said they filed the sides of their dark eggs down with an memory board, but I was under the impression doing that would cause long term damage to the growing chick
That was my thought as well. I understood it to be that it could cause respiratory issues for those that surviveI would never do something to remove the bloom off of the egg. No need to file just keep humidity low.
