All Black Flock

Interesting. I have a chicken that is solid black by happenstance. She is half Araucana Colombian Splash and half Polish. She has a short pouf on her head that is also all black. She has a fun personality but because she is all black people assume she’s a roo! She lays light brown eggs.

I'm not sure why people would assume she was a roo based on color...There are many solid black breeds and, as with yours, many that just happen to turn out all black...She is very pretty 😊

I just went through and checked all of mine again and if I'm correct, I ended up with three male Ayam Cemani and two female as well as two male Black Ameraucana and eight female

Sooo...Ignore the hair, he did most of that Lol

This is Diaval(again) and after he decided to jump to the top of the brooder(and try to get himself stuck behind it) he chilled with me for a bit, then nuzzled up in my hair and has been asleep for 15 minutes. 😏

He has already jumped up a good 10 times that I've seen today...A couple others did once each, but he wouldn't quit...Pain in the butt. Definitely glad my cat and Shepherd love them so I don't have to freak out too much about that

I also like black chickens, last year I successfully crossbred an Ayam cemani hen with an araucana roo and now I have a solid black chicken that lays green eggs.

Edit: Most probably, considering black sexlinks, must have been my ac roo that mated with an araucana hen..

That's too cool! I plan to try that late, but I'm not sure if I want to go with the Cemani(when I get my good line) or my Sumatra...The Roos tails are gorgeous in the Sumatra, so I've actually been leaning more toward them

I’ve heard Cemanis are good flyers so keep that in mind, I didn’t even know about them until the roo from the small flock I was watching flew the fence and got eaten by a fox, I incubated all the eggs he might have fertilized now I have 8 half’s, three orps that turned out almost all black and 5 that look like their barred rock mom. I really want Ayam Cemanis now.. but their poor egg laying kinda stops me from ordering any. All of these chicks mommas are great layers, it would be awesome to create Ayams that lay well

Poor layers doesn't mean that they lay sporadically. True, it can be a long time before starting to lay eggs in between (sometimes only twice a year) but once they start laying they can go for a month or more laying one per day or per second day. That gives you plenty of time to collect a batch and incubate them.

In Sweden, exactly for this reason, ie better laying, they created their own black chicken breed named svarthona. I don't know if it has been around in the states.

What about the black langshen breed? I love mine. My rooster is super calm. My gals are very gentle & always give me big brown eggs almost every day.

I actually initially started out with Black Australorps, but changed my mind later on because I needed a darker brown layer for my future plans...I actually spoke with a gentleman on here about some Black Penedesenca, as trying to use BCM would leave some red and French Black Marans eggs are not nearly as dark...Sumatra and Cemani are not in the colored egg category, but I could not pass up their beauty, especially the Sumatra! Their tails can get up to four feet long when taken care of properly! I love that 💖
