I just saw an ad on Craigs List in my area for a beautiful coop made of all cedar. I know several posters have said that cedar chips are toxic but wouldn't a coop made from cedar be toxic as well?

This is just a guess, but I think it's the shavings that would bother them because they are stepping on the cedar chips and stirring up cedar dust. Its bad if they breathe it in, but I think the coop made out of cedar would be fine. I hope someone else corrects me if I'm wrong though

No, I gather they wouldn't be eating the coop. LOL! The dust from shavings makes sense. It's a VERY nice coop, though spendy at $450. Thanks for the insight.

Depends on who you ask. That "cedar smell" is a potential respiratory irritant all by itself. Birds are VERY sensitive to respiratory irritants. However, there are old timers who have raised chicks on cedar shavings for decades who would argue that it's FINE. There are also some who claim that shavings with a strong pine scent are just as risky. It's your call. Personally, I wouldn't because if a chick died, I'd be worried that it was from the cedar.

Thanks. Materials alone run $300.00, and by the time you factor my time I'm making less than 10 bucks an hour putting these things together. But it is 10 bucks an hour hanging out in my shop drinking beer and watching movies sooooo I've got that going for me :-)

I don't know what others say or feel, But I have raised chicken from RIR, Buff orph's bramha's to now I have Turken's & Americana's raised on white cedar shavings from our planer and not once have lost or had a sick chick or chicken to the cedar shaving, and don't have a problem with the dogs bedding either

There may be a difference in Cedar species as well. It also may have to do with ventilation and cross ventilation. Thats cool that you make your own shavings. I have also heard of mixing Cedar in with the pine to take advantage of the Pesticid quality of cedar without the overwhelming odor.
