It is true that your rooster will tend to live longer if he doesn't eat layer.
I find my flock will on occasion go on an oyster shell binge.
But then they are done and the dish is full for what feels like forever.
No idea why... and I haven't taken notes... but it might be in the winter with only ice, snow, and feed to eat...they eat way more oyster shell... and in the summer with bugs and plants and such they just no longer need it as much.
I do know the oyster shell dishes at my place have kept getting empty quite quickly these last 2 months.
So... I would continue feeding as you are...and not worry about it. I agree your rooster might have just been playing in the oyster shell.
Sometimes too a nice rooster will peck at feed but not eat it, then call the ladies over to eat it.
