I'm sorry for the loss of all your animals. How devastating for you. I have lost ducks to predators and their is nothing more heart breaking then seeing them all dead and not one actually eaten.

First~~I'm so sorry for your loss; it's devastating, especially for your son.

Second~~I don't think it was a dog; last summer I lost 14 pullets in one night to an OPPOSSUM---he didn't eat them, he just murdered them, bit their heads off.... We know it was an oppossum because after he found his way in, he couldn't find his way out.

Definitely trap it, and dispose of it....then reset the trap every night, even if you don't catch anything for weeks. My trap stays set 365 days a year, and I've only caught 1 oppossum---but that's one less looking for a meal in my coop.

If someone makes an unkind remark such as "they were only chickens," ask how that person would feel if a coyote or fox ate their pet cat or dog (use whichever pet you know they have).

What part of the country are you in? This is "Poultry Show" season in many areas, and virtually all shows have a sales area. You should be able to get some nice birds if there is a show nearby.

I see you are in NC. I would post on craigslist if no one on BYC has chicks to sell. I see people hatching and posting to sell on my craigs all year long. If my ds wouldn't throw a fit(and I was closer) I would give you my 3 red sex link hens. They attack my teens and are currently in my garage.Unfortunately my ds started crying when I said we should rehome them.

Maybe with the snow you will get some tracks to ID. I would put one of the birds in the trap,or if that is too hard on the kids(to see) buy some cheap chicken meat.A game cam is a good idea too.It is neat to see what is prowling in the yard when the sun goes down.

Again sorry for your loss. The hens are our highlight of the day more than any other pet we have.

Wow, thanks for all the support guys! It really makes me feel better to know at least some folks understand!

I checked craigslist as some of you suggested and emailed a couple of prospects, no answer yet :-(

I also found a show on the 17th a couple of hours away so another good suggestion!

I really don't want to start over with eggs again but I guess we will if we have to.

Nothing in the trap this morning btw, but the temperature difference was about 20 degrees from last night.

Oh and I am in Oxford, NC.......so if any BYCers nearby have anything for sale please do pm me!
