Anyway, that's a dog doing that. Any other predator would have eaten them. You need to talk to your neighbors about their dogs getting in your yard.

Been there done that. Of the many predators I've had over the years, it's the dogs that have done that to me several times-----killing all they could get to and rarely eating any or only the last one killed. Other predators I've had would make the chickens’ headcount diminish one by one till I caught/killed the culprit. Raccoons, Foxes, hawks, possums, feral cats & coyotes. (No bears, cougars, or weasels yet!)

my biggest fear. so sorry. sounds like a weasel, I hear they will kill everyone in a single night

I honestly have never ever seen the neighbors dog in our yard.....or anyone's dog for that matter.

My husband just called me. He took the day off and has spent the time predator proofing (HE says!) the coop. He removed the floor ramp and that door, put down a new floor (rat wire over wood) basically removing the access from the bottom of the coop that was like a pen. The girls always free ranged during the day with never a problem. The bottom of the coop was always the point of attack. He also went and bought a trap and set that up. Of course I wish we had done all this before but like I said, we thought they were safe. *sighs*

He called the gentlemen we bought our girls from but he has gone out of business. Any recommendations on where to purchase laying hens in the middle of winter?

Thank you so much for all of your comments by the way. No one at work seems to understand.

Un-chicken people rarely understand the devastation you feel. So sorry for your family. You can always come here to express your feelings, many of us understand all too well.

I would check your local craigslist.org
They won't be show quality, but they will lay for you and be companions.

So sorry to hear about this. If you were closer, I've got some odds and ends I'd send your way!

Shelly
