My lord my slw left me this gorgeous huge present yesterday. There has to be at least two yolks in there!

Be careful what you wish for! Hens are born with a set number of embryos. If they use 2 in every egg, you will only get half the number of eggs over the hen's lifetime that you would get if they only used one per egg.

Yep, new layers often lay double yolkers in the first month or so until things are all tuned up.....
.....but you don't really want them to continue to do that.

I didn't know that they only have a set number they are born with. Thanks for the good info. Thought it was pretty cool how her eggs are normally small and then all of a sudden bam she lays this gigantic thing!

A set number, yes, but that set number is in the thousands (~4,000).

Many, many more than an average hen will develop in her lifetime.

If an average hen lays ~260 eggs a year, all double yolkers, she will run out of embryos in around 7 1/2 years, and set some interesting records at that...
