All I want for Christmas is...

Hi and welcome to BYC. I wish you the best of luck.

On this link you'll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping birds - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archives . Ditto the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes

Welcome to BYC, Boy this brings back memorys ! I was probably the same age as your DD and we were living w/ my GM in Ky. We didnt have anything and my birthday was rolling up. My aunt had chickens and Mom commissioned 2 of them to fry for my special day. Mom asked me what I would like for my special day and I said I wanted that chicken. She seemed confused. I said I would fix them for you. No mom, you dont understand, LOL I WANT one of those chickens. That started my life time love of all things fowl. I didnt have a coop or fancy anything. Just table scraps and a free ranging hen but she was my friend that winter. Well, A big ice storm came and mom woke me with the bad news. My chicken was frozen to the ground dead. I jumped out of bed and headed out. What a sight ! Feet in an inch of ice,:hugs wings froze to the ground, head thrown back. Then I head Awkkkk... :hmm Well, I got a shovel and broke her free from the ice and threw her under my GM house. (which used to be a chicken coop BTW) She thawed out but she never was the same really. She would catch baby snakes and bring them to me on the porch which my GM did not appreciate at all. Hahaha One day she didnt show up. She was gone. I suspect the predator that got her was my GM but I had way too much respect to ask her. Anyway, moral I guess is get the girl a chicken, and maybe she will remember fondly her memorys and become a lover of all things fowl too.

:welcome :frow DE = Diatomaceous Earth. I don't exactly use the deep litter but I do have pine shavings in my coops that have floors. It's easier to clean out the poop. Good luck and have fun...
Not very deep litter in this picture, I usually have more shaving in the coops.
