All I want is fresh eggs and help in the garden (Virginia)

Had chickens growing up. Dreaming of having a few for fresh eggs and help in the garden. Already enjoy lots of gardening, composting, and have a tiny worm apartment for the best soil mixture. A few brightly colored hens would be a perfect complement.

Been enjoying the community here for a while -- forum has a lot of great information and resources. Relocating to the south-western Virginia area from Williamsburg. My tiny backyard in Williamsburg really didn't leave much room beyond a garden bed and deck.

Looking forward to being around the forum, but first need to find a place where it's not illegal to have a few chickens in your back yard.

Welcome! Rockbridge County is (outside of the city of Lexingon and the town of Glasgow that is) fantastic about chickens. I can have as many as I want, including roosters. Cows, goats, horses, whatever are fine (even on my little 1/3 of an acre) The county would only begin to frown if I wanted to open a Tyson sized commercial operation (not that I would do that anyway!) Rockbridge is central west (WVa area), so you might be looking further south west. Salem, in the Roanoke area just passed a poultry ordinance which allows for 5 (or 6?) hens, no roosters.

I think if you are inside town or cities, vs "county," you will likely need to abide by more stringent rules.

Welcome

You mention SW parts of VA. Does that mean towards the Mts or SW of Wmsbg? Like someone mentioned as long as you are not in a city you should be good. BUT check before you buy!! Never now.

We left the Hampton Roads area 10 yrs ago. We were looking in the SW area close to Portsmouth/Norfolk area. Country setting, since then built up! We live in Central VA. Middle of everything, Mts, shore, DC and we are zoned so we can have farm animals.

I worked at Goshen for a summer, one of my ancestors was President (Henry Ruffner) of Washington Lee College in Lexington VA. That's a good area. Roanoke sounds pretty progressive to allow small number of chickens in the city.

I'll be relocating to Martinsville VA, most of the houses my wife really likes are within city limits. But I'll look at Roanokes legislation to see if relevant can be adopted under permit (like dog and cat licenses.)

My wife's happiness overrules chickens right now, even though she had the original idea -- but I'll be sure to show her pictures of the neat looking chickens you have. Until then, I'll be looking for someone to borrow chickens from to till garden to see if anyone complains.
